    Hey Smart Canucks!

I headed off to SDM yesterday to take advantage of the bonus redemption weekend and after a good hour at a 24hour location I had all my goodies in my cart ready to cash out. (My poor boyfriend was such a trooper! He didn't rush me or complain once. He just found a seat near the pharmacy and waited. :D) I even double checked my calculations by adding my total up while putting things in my cart! This was my first redemption.

Off to the register I went. There were quite a few people and only one cashier. They eventually got the man on re-stocking duty to help out, so I went to his till. I told him that I was looking to redeem $200 and to let me know when I've reached it. When he did, I realized I still had a few items left that he didn't scan yet but my total was already over $200.

With a line up behind me I didn't want to cause a fuss, perhaps my calculations were incorrect. We left the store and I of course checked my receipt. Now..here's the reason as to why I'm even posting this..

For 75,000 points I was given only $183.84 off my total. This is the total before tax. I didn't have $200 worth of items as I thought I did or wanted to have. It ends up my calculations weren't wrong, the cashier had taken account the taxes as part of the $200.

What do I do? Its only $16.xx, but money is money.
Has this ever happened to anyone else?
    Am I missing something?

Your subtotal is less than $200. You just gave up $16.

Next time ask the cashier if you have picked up $200 worth of stuff before giving them your card.

Maybe he was reading the receipt after taxes. The cashiers are probably trained to check pretax and he might not have known that. So you paid the 23.00 tax amount?

Go back and explain the situation. It may be worth it to give it a try.

you should've told the cashier to get the supervisor to void the transaction and redo the purchase.

I was trying to meet the $200 total and even told him so. I guess he read me the after tax total instead and I didn't realize. Thanks for the tip though

I agree with linh_11. They can just void the transaction and do it again for u. I went to redeem today and they messed up the redemption level, so they just voided the transaction and did the entire purchase again.

Redemption weekend is over, so I guess my chances of having my transaction voided and reprocessed is over as well?

You could do a refund with a purchase paid by Shoppers Optimum points, they will give you cash back since they cannot give your points back. You can get back $208 if you decide to go through with it. It will still not fully compensate you for the points because you did not redeem $200, only $184.

You can call Shoppers Head Office and complain, maybe they will give you something, but I think you should have double checked you actually had $200 worth of stuff at the check out, this seems to be partly your fault too.

Oh, I agree. It was my mistake not to have checked thoroughly and I didn't mean to make it sound like I was blaming anyone! I just unsure of what happened. :\ Thanks for the refund advice!

I almost had the same thing happen to me. I always ask for the sub-total and then clarify when they give that to me by asking if that is the before tax total. I held one item back yesterday and the cashier gave me a total over $85 which my redemption level. Then when I said before tax she said I was under the $85 and so we added in the held back item. That put me at $89 pretax so I paid the difference and the tax.

Alot of the cashiers don't under the whole pretax, coupon use etc when you are trying to each a certain level. Happens alot on 20X points days also.

Don't feel bad, it would bug me too! But hey you got alot of free stuff!!

My cashier was not so good. I asked to redeem $100 (this was my first redemption) and she took off 75000 pts. I have called head office and they said they would put back the 35000 today. I have learned you need to check your receipt before you leave the store.

Make a list and take a calculator next time you redeem.I made a list that had the shelf prices and sale flyer prices on it only one item was less than the shelf price.A few things I bought didn't have sale flyer price on the shelf but the sale flyer price was on the receipt.

That happened to me last night although my cashier was well trained and informed me I had to spend 200 b4 taxes.
