Neighbor complains about us hanging cloths to dry (washed clothing) in the backyard

There was something like this on the news before. This one neighbour complained about the laundry hanging in the other neighbours backyard and the city was siding with the nosey neighbour, who would have to be upstairs looking out the window to even see it. The neighbourhood was one of those circle drive things with those really nice houses built close together...Yet the nosey neighbour had a huge boat with an ugly tarp half over it in his driveway...Now really which is uglier???

Thankfully we live in the boonies so we hang everything outside to dry :) yep undies and all LOL!!!

I bet he does nothing for the environnement and is very wasteful with electricity, food, etc. Hanging laundry on the clotheslines is a good thing.

I think your neighbours need more fibre in their diet. Perhaps put a few All Bran coupons in their mailboxes and see if their disposition improves. ;)

Seriously though, of all the things in the world there is to complain about, he'd complain about a neighbour's clean laundry? That's just silly.

Of all the things to complain about, this is stupid and petty! You are saving money and doing your part for the environment. I would pick up brochures for starving children and the poor, and I would thank the neighbour for his/her concern, but I would tell them in a very firm tone, to fight a fight worth fighting instead of picking on people who are doing the right thing for the environment. If there is no bylaw, too damn bad!

Actually, I have a bad temper when it comes to utter stupidity and he would never have came back to my house again after what I had to say. Can you guess what I would have said? First word begins with *F* second word begins with an *O* :)

OMG. People annoy me sometimes...

Ontarians free to hang clothes in yards

If you live in a house in Ontario, no one can stop you from letting your clothes hang out in your own backyard.


But many apartment dwellers will have to keep popping change in the dryer if they can't find a spot in their cramped living rooms and bathrooms to hang their wet clothes.

Restrictions that ban clotheslines in ground-level homes, including those in agreements between home builders and buyers, are no longer in effect, [emphasis mine] Premier Dalton McGuinty announced Friday at a news conference in Toronto.

Jane Almeida, a spokeswoman for the premier's office said the new regulations are retroactive to Thursday at 4 p.m.

However, they don't apply to agreements banning clothelines in apartment buildings and condos due to safety concerns, she told CBCNews.ca.

Energy Minister Gerry Phillips said using a clothesline instead of a dryer will help families save money and reduce the demand for electricity, reducing pollution in the process.

Ontario currently relies on nuclear energy for more than 50 per cent of its power, hydroelectricity for 22 per cent, and burning coal for much of the rest.

The province announced in January that it planned to end clothelines restrictions by the summer.

I never knew places even had by-laws against this. What a stupid thing to complain about. Most of my neighbours hang up their clothes including underwear. Most I ever heard about it was one older lady had her bra stolen off the line but that was years ago and they just thought it was teenagers

Your neighbor is a nosy opinionated jerk who would do well to mind his own business. What the Heck is he doing trying to dictate to you what you can and cannot do on your own property (your private back yard!!!)? Bet the nosy bugger wouldnt complain one bit if you laid out on your back yard in your skimpiest bikini for some sun!

Please, next time he threatens to call the city to complain about you hanging your clothes out, let him use your phone, heck, even dial the city for him so you can witness them laughing at his absurdity. Idiots like that need to get a hobby, to get a life.

In the meantime, enjoy the lovely summer weather and dont let this bone head stop you from enjoying the fresh clean smell your clothes get from drying in the sun and the fresh summer air.

A few people have hinted at this, but I'll say it outright: is there a chance your neighbour has mental health issues?

It sounds like at one time there were by-laws against hanging clothes out to dry (which absolutely blows my mind -- how much impact on property value could hanging clothes possibly have?). But for him to go out of his way to complain about it, when it doesn't really affect him in any way... well, that just sounds unbalanced to me.

Do you have any reason to think this could be part of a much bigger problem for him? If so, I'd suggest being understanding but firm -- acknowledge his feelings, but tell him that it's important to you that you hang your clothes out since it helps the environment. Can't guarantee that will work, but it may be the best you can do.

But if you don't think he has a mental health issue, and you think he's just being an ***** for the sake of being an *****, well then ***** his ***** with a ***** until his ***** are completely *****. Preferably with a bal-peen hammer. In other words, tell him to ***** *****. But politely of course. :)

He could, of course, perhaps have a fear of hanging laundry... or clean clothes....I suggest therapy or perhaps a neighbourhood clothes hanging.

That'll really traumatize the poor bugger - a public hanging (clothes hanging, that is...).

I love the smell of clothes dried on the line. Since we did our home reno my clothes line came down and has not been put back.:sad:

We used to hang our clothes out all the time. Heck we even had 2 lines up!

I agree with Insane. He didn't sound so sick to me if he could come over and complain about that.

I can understand if you were partying people and ran a drug house and an escort(nicer way of saying it) out of your house and had the police visiting everynight but come on. This is pathetic. He needs a life!!!

There are far worse things neighbours could be doing to each other than hanging laundry!

I had a friend growing up who had a phobia over toast crumbs, so who knows?
