HD PVR's?!?
What do people do for the above? We have always rented one (currently 2) from Rogers, but damn, it is expensive! I see they're on sale this week at Best Buy (I believe) for $399... has anyone bought one outright before? Are there any better deals out there for them? Can you buy them used? Any advice is appreciated!

good question, I was thinking about this too! :)

i bought mine outright.. yes it does seem expensive (and it is!) but i'd never go back i LOVE it, i've even bought the external hard drive to extend the memory
i've found they tend to stay at a steady rate, if it's onsale at future shop theres a good chance it's also onsale at your local cable store outlet (for me shaw) the prices tend to be set at the company.. (sorta like how apple products are )
best suggestion make sure it can have an external hard drive (i think most do now) because at some point you may want to have that perk to add extra expecially with so much HD programing now a days

we have about 5 of them since we don't use cable. we have an over the air antenna that gets HD, really good quality, channels from Toronto and Buffalo. all our tvs are connected to one, so that when shows are at the same time slot, we can easily record two and watch a third one live.
but, my husband will not pay over $300 for any recorder. we have 2 that cost $50 each from xscargo. the most expensive one that we have is $100, again from xscargo.

We bought ours outright, at first I thought it was silly but Dh still made the purchase...OMG I cannot believe how much I love it! Literally it's "set it, and forget it" If I go out for an evening I don't have to worry about "oh did I remember to rewind the VCR" My buddy (PVR) takes care of it all. Oh and you never have to watch an annoying commercial again! I love my PVR! Money was well spent :)

If you're not in a contract then call Rogers and tell them that Bell is offering you one for free. Or just tell them that you've had enough of paying for it and what can they do for you. We just did that with them and we got it free for another year, plus a 30% discount.
Just be pushy (like they are) and don't give up!
ETA: We're not the negotiating or pushy type but we figured the $25+ a month is better in our pocket.
