From today's Ottawa Citizen:
'Did you know that inactive cellphones can still be used to dial 911?
Wireless phone operators in Canada and the US are required by law to connect all calls to 911 services even if the customer account is no longer active.
So instead of junking your old mobile, why not leave it in the glove box of your car in case of emergencies? Just make sure the battery is fully charged.'

I thought everyone knew that?
That's why when you remove the SIM card, all you can dial is 911 for emergency. That's it.Appreciate my help? I'd also appreciate it if you used my referrals

I had no idea. My Dad is or was going to junk two cell phones. One he is for sure regardless because it is defective. He does have a new one now but I guess the other one he could maybe use for 911 calls. Not sure he would need it though since he has a new one. Only one car and my Mom also has a cell as do I.

I didn't know that for sure, either. It sounds like one of those things that should be a fact, but you find out in an emergency that it isn't. I don't have to recycle my old phones, now, since all I'd really need them for would be 911
Thanks consumatrix

Not really the same thing though. If someone has a cell they aren't using because say they terminated their contract, switched companies etc. they would logically think of throwing it out or recycling it. You can't throw a payphone out. lol
My Dad is going to give his old cell to a womans shelter because it is pointless for him to keep for emergency as he has a new one and my Mom has one. No need for three. There is always one in his car.
Also not all cell phones have SIM cards like another member mentioned. Mine doesn't nor does my mom or dads.
