Please tell me: what is poutine?
Borob, I think Lays has some cheese chips. They might be similar to the ones you mentioned. There are so many different flavors of chips now that there is a whole aisle of the grocery store for them. I try not to look too closely, because their might be some that I just have to buy!
We don't have a deposit fee for soft drink containers here, although I remember when they only came in glass bottles that we did then.

WOW!!! No smarties? no ketchup chips? I wonder what wonderful snacks they have in the states that i have never tried!! I have never been outside Canada before!!
I have an uncle that lives in Saskatchewan. He drove to Ontario this summer and stocked up on pop because he didn't have to pay the deposit they have to pay there...and he gets to return them for a refund!! it was way cheaper for him to get them here!

OMG!! It's totally dead on here all weekend and I'm busy for awhile and whammo...3 pages of posts!!
After the first page, I wanted to say that I would send people things that they wanted and couldn't get. Then someone mentioned a swap. That would be great too. I have the benefit of shopping at the military commissary also, so I get a great deal on most stuff. For example, Fruity Pebbles I can usually get for $1.50-$2.00 a box. Are the smarties you are talking about the little candy rolls??
Where I live there is no deposit on sodas. Years ago, they made them in cartons that held 8 16oz glass bottles. You paid 10 cents deposit and got 10 cents back per bottle. I wanna say it's been about 30 years since then. There is optional curbside recycling in my town and there are centers that will buy the cans and other metals. I want to say that it's only about 50 cents a pound here.
I'll reply more later. I've got a lot of questions now!! I really didn't know it was so different either!
roseofblack-I've got something for you....or anyone else that wants it
I would love to try some Canadian stuff as well!
I'll have to get more detailed later though. I have to get dinner fixed, the grass mowed, and the kids in gear for school tomorrow.

Hmmmmm I'm not sure we can return ANY LOL, but remember we pay it up front! Plus there's nothing to pick up because people don't throw them out!

Poutine is actually pronounced "pootin" (poo as in winnie the pooh and tin as a tin can) and is a French word
Poutine Québequoise is what it is actually called and originates from Québec. There's also poutine italienne which is the fries with the spaghetti sauce and melted mozzarella on the top...the poutine Québequoise is the fries with the gravy and melted mozzarella on top! I love to plaster ketchup on it too! It's very yummy! It's in all of our restaurants here as well but I'm French and live in a totally French Acadian community
Smarties are not the ones that come in the roll but my husband was familiar with those...
The smarties we have are made by Nestlés and come in a box...here is a site you can see them at...they are yummy...sort of like M & M's in different colors!

Have a great evening everyone!

Sorry for my prolonged silence, I've been down with a nasty flu bug that won't go away (week 4 and I'm finally back amongst the living). I came on the board during the kerfuffle, got thoroughly confused as to what was going on, and went back to bed.
I tried to submit some recipes, but kept crashing, so gave up. I managed to vote a few times for our southern neighbours on the board, before the site decided I no longer exist. I *think* I submitted a few comments, but who knows.
A few years back (OK, more years than I care to remember), I had a summer job at a company that made spices and flavourings. My responsibility was to keep the salespeople happy and come up with *unique* flavours for potato chips. I won't go into the really weird flavours, but did have a few winners with Chicken Cacciatore and Roast Beef & Onions (really, really good). Unfortunately, I never did see the flavours we came up with for sale around here (I'm in Toronto, ON).
The one staple I really missed when visiting the States was Hawaiian Pizza. To the uninitiated, it's pineapple and ham (sounds weird, but really yummy!). That was when I discovered that not all Pizza Huts have the same menu.
Is the Halloween contest only for children? My brats get dressed every year to entertain the kids in my building. Last year, my cat had on an orange Jack-O-Lantern sweater and a witch's hat, while my dog was dressed like a pirate, complete with eye patch, hat and a plastic knife with a retractable blade that she carried around. Both were thrilled with the fuss made over them (from my youngest and oldest neighbours).
Hope everyone is enjoying the dog days of summer and isn't getting too, too wet.

I should not have dropped in, Im starving and all we're talkin' is food! rofl! stomach growling ... no roaring!!! lol
Here in Manitoba we pay eco fee on anything canned/plastic/boxed drinks ... no one gives us a depost/money back ... but .... dh and I are big recyclers, for every "green" bag to the dump, at least 3 bags of recycling and a box of paper/cardboard.
when you are in the country and you have to "live" with it, you recycle. City folks not so much, its hauled away and they forget about it.
Well, Im feeling word deprived, and what happened to the rest of the hunt words in the forums, did anyone find any more? Its over so it doesn't matter anyway.
and ... did anyone get points for voting i the contest "our SC won" not to mention names there NS! lol
Oh I should go shove some food in my mouth so I shut up! lol

I am an American import into Canada too
I actually met my husband playing an online game called Everquest. It was very confusing and wierd when I first moved here, as far as food goes. Everything (even brands I recognized) tasted different.. I honestly believe that Americans get more additives in their foods than we do here in Canada.
To clear up the "Smarties conundrum"... Smarties here in Canada come in a box, and look a lot like M&M's, they are candy on the outside with chocolate inside. Smarties in the states are little round candies that come in a clear wrapper that is twisted on the ends, in Canada the same candy exact roll of candy is called "Rockets".
Wierd! It confused me at first, and my stepson thought I was crazy... lmao.
I personally don't like the chocolate Smarties very much though... but I was never an M&M Person either

when i was kid my nan used to bring back teddy grams from the states (she spent the winters in florida) of course that was way back then before you could buy them here.
and something i don't understand at all... American cheese? it's just cheddar with a different name... isn't it? oh and cheese in a can, i don't think you can get that in Canada anymore, which is odd because the cans it comes in are made here (my dad helped design the machine). Pepsi is going to be coming out in aluminum cans soon too, but from what i know only in the states. there are 6 different designs, all vintagy ( i got to see the early runs of them)

ok kekes..grab some food, i got explaining to do.
I think as arm pointed out, it takes along time to get around to getting the actual prize from a sheknows contest. she might know how long it actually takes to get the pts for voting (or for the votes, who knows how that works).
but they usually tell you when they are appting the points as you can't enter words during this time. they still have the notice up for one waaay back..show us your new do, and the cutest couples contest, which were back way before i found this thread.
so go figure. we could be waiting a while. i hope the ppl that VOTED get the pts and not the ppl that rec'd votes. i think that would be more fair. and i wish they would hurry up with me dang prize!!!! the cat pee'd up the porch and poo'd infront of the litter box. i feel sorry for it and frustrated at the same time.
i could never work in a nursing home.
