NS - isn't jigg dinner something with cabbage and beef? I'm not sure what all's in it, but I know that you put some veggies in a bag.

All I know is that if it's Jigg's dinner, it's obviously not my dinner. If I were Jigg, I'd put my bottle of wine in the bag.

Jigg's Dinner...wonder if it's what we call a "Boiled Dinner" with ham and vegetables. When I lived in Ontario, there they called it a "Poor Man's Dinner"...
Or, could it be a "pot roast"??

okay, you guys are so close. it is a boiled dinner. it is cornbeef (or salt beef) with cabbage, potatoes and turnip. BUT. a traditional jiggs dinner also includes something you put in a "pudding bag" and cook with the beef for 2 hours.
arm got it pretty close but you don't put vegetables exactly in the bag. go check out her very interesting gift she won!
comeone snake and kaela, your newfies what are we making with the pudding bag?
and damn it was good! i think it cured my cold..
(newfies don't do this, but i pour everything ontop of a pc of bread and juice to make it soggy)Last edited by NSangel; Sun, Sep 21st, 2008 at 05:12 PM.

it's not that kinda puddin! *sigh* a pudding bag is a bag made of cloth, like muslin? ya put something inside it too cook and tie with twine. can be used for diff things but normally one particular thing goes in it for the boiled dinner (aka jiggs dinner).

your jiggs dinner is a lot diff then ours. A newfie jiggs dinner is salt meat, carrots, cabbage, turnup, potatoes, dough boys, peas puddin, bread puddin, all cooked in the one pot. Chicken or whatever meat in the oven then make gravy out of the liquor from the cook pot.
