There's a method called "Pick up put down".
He cries, you pick him up and sooth him in a non-pitying way and the moment he's stopped, put him down again. The first night I must have done it 50x... yes - my arm muscles still hurt LOL. Last night I only had to go back in once and rubbed his back, no need to pick him up and he fell asleep 2 min later. Nap time is different... It's not dark out. I figure once he's got the bedtime down pact, I can start working on naps.
It's a lot more work than crying it out but I just don't have the heart to do it.
