Research Study on Using a “Smart” Wearable Camera (the SenseCam)
University of Toronto researchers are studying how people might respond to a wearable camera that takes pictures automatically. This will help researchers develop a better understanding about picture taking devices and privacy.
To participate, you must first complete a short background survey that should take less than 10 minutes and can be accessed on-line at http://torurg.org/sensecam_study
We will use the information you submit there to select a wide variety of people for the study. You must be 18 to participate in the study, but there are no other specific requirements.
If you are selected, you will be asked to participate in a training session that will take less than an hour. Then, you will be asked to go about your normal life, and every time you talk with someone new for more than a minute, you will fill out a survey about your feelings, as if you had actually been using SenseCam at that time. No working SenseCams will be used and no actual pictures will ever be taken. You will also hand them a survey so they can report their feelings. They will mail this survey in. You will never see their answers. You won’t know if they have completed it or not. You will be compensated $1 for each survey you distribute, up to 50. You will also be compensated $20 per meeting with the researchers for your time and transportation, approximately 1 hour for the training and 30 minutes to one hour for each weekly meeting until all 50 surveys have been distributed (or 3 weeks into your participation, whichever occurs first).
There are no benefits to you for participating in this research, but we hope your participation will help people design better cameras in the future and help governments and corporations make better policies about cameras. There is no greater risk to your being in this study than you might experience in daily life. If you do not want to be in this study, you do not have to be. You can leave the study at any time.
We want a wide range of people to be involved in the research, so if you are interested, please complete this survey to tell us a little about yourself: http://torurg.org/sensecam_study . The survey should only take you a few minutes to complete. If you have any questions, please contact the lead researcher, Dr. Khai Truong.
