Both
There are some trains open to newbies but I am sure any of the Toronto peeps would vouch for you since you bring coupons to meetups (actually we really should give you trade ratings for some of the coupons)
(swagbuck referral link in my sig LOL) - I just posted a mini overview for a newbie on earning on it here: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/2828872-post6.html

Swagbucks just paid for a few of my Christmas gift purchases via amazon.ca gift cards. Even if you use it only casually for searches it still adds up to a decent amount.
And we did give trade ratings from the first few meetings - just was unnecessary for most of the regulars!Join Swagbucks for free GCs & prizes, just by searching: http://www.swagbucks.com/refer/Chicka

I think Sunraven hosts trains every so often - she'd be the one to check with.
As for Swagbucks, I also did some Xmas shopping courtesy of the amazon GCs I got from using that site. Another one is Irazoo.com - takes a bit to get the GCs (have to wait 2+ months), but it doesn't take long to get points. Hotspex is another that gives points you can redeem for GCs - in this case, you do surveys instead of searches.
There's also PointsandPrizes, where you enter words to get points, which you can trade in for "prizes". I've managed to snag a few DVDs & books over the last 2+ yrs. I'm currently working on a spreadsheet to keep the words organized & easily accessed.

Not sure about coupon trains, although I think it has to do with posting a wish list & each rider on the train sends coupons on your list (& you send coupons on their lists).
As for skankapalooza, Patty Smyth, queen of the skanks, can better explain that one. Long story short, she comes up with unique names for her trains & well the skank thing caught fire & took off.

According to Patty, skank nation came about because:
O.k. that would be my fault. About a year ago, I think, I started a train called Patty's train for Hosers, Posers, Skanks and Rockin' Rioters and everyone wanted to be a skank. You see the first train I did was the Craptacular Bi-directional train for Virgins and so then of course they couldn't be virgins anymore so they all became skanks and now we sort of have a Skank Nation going. It's all in fun of course.
