Am I the only person thinking it's wrong for my nephews school to be teaching him sex ed... in grade 1 [aka teaching 6 year olds].
I never learned the 'whole thing' until grade 9 but in grade 5 our teachers seperated the girls from the boys and explain periods and touched on sex but not enough to make us curious or ask a bunch of questions to our parents.
I'm all for informing the kids but thats too young.Back in my day [oh god i'm getting old =(] the school sent permission slips home for nearly every damn thing.. i think they should ahve done that.. my SIL is P.o'd as she learned about this sex ed thing from her niece [same class as my nephew].
Personally I would have waited until oh i dunno.. he started asking questions or something like that.

Kitten - it totally depends what they are being taught.
When my son was in Grade One, they started their program called "Fully Alive" (Catholic), and everything was very simplified.... nothing graphic, nothing to offend anyone's sensibilities. We got to see the student book ahead of time so we were prepared, and were also given a parent handbook with more information should we want to go further with anything.
It is a program developed upon themes - families, feelings, commitment, friends, etc. mostly done through stories of families - and the biology of sex is handled well.
Parents could have their child opt out of the class - but it was not 'free time' for those not attending, they got alternate work to do. Very few didn't take it.
By age six, parents at home usually have had some sort of initial talk with their children - very basic at least.
