No, dont think I could do it and I wouldn't even want to try. lol.

Of course buying groceries and paying bills are our number one priority but after those are paid I enjoy buying certain things, especially stuff for DD and of course vacations.

I thought they weren't buying anything at all.... I can shop used no prob! I also always use craiglist, usedvancouver.com, list4all.com, etc.

Lets see a real challenge of not buying anything at all for a year! That I won't do, I could try, but I probably wouldn't be to successful!

if we're talking about material goods, then I absolutely can. I already spend most of my disposable income on travelling and experiences (ie. fine dining, wines, sporting events), so it's fine as long as I can still do that.

I like to change my hair colour and style so much. I couldn't stop doing that. Plus not getting a new mascara every three months? Or a fresh pillow every six?

    Nope, couldn't do it.

But as everyone else was saying, times are tough. Most of us have learned to look for the bargain (duh! We ARE all Smart Canucks!) so we are already mindful of our money. I think that is the bigger lesson here to teach our kids.
Remember that even though pets are here for such a short time they teach us things we would never be able to learn in many lifetimes on our own.

I've been on a no-buy since January 12th, which means I don't buy anything that isn't a necessity (food, toilet paper, etc being the obvious exceptions). It's been sorely testing at time, as I especially love to buy makeup and cosmetics. It has reduced the amount of clutter in my place as well as make me think hard about purchases. Can't wait till April 12th though, so I can get a haircut and new body lotion.

Nope...wouldn't even pretend to want to try it.
I enjoy shopping and I like NEW things. I don't do used.
Thats perfectly fine for others, just not my taste.

Maybe. As it is I live below the poverty line. I have other things to purchase, like medical supplies and university textbooks. I think that living on a really tight budget is enough for me. Thank you.

Hi there, I am in the middle of a year long challenge to not buy anything new (Jan. 1-Dec. 31st) and feel pretty good about my ability to stay the course, having as of today completed 25% of that time. I have been blogging about it at www.nonewfortara.blogspot.com. Admittedly, my ground rules are less strict than some people with similar challenges. For example, I can go out to a show or a movie, and a restaurant for a social event (I am not limiting 'experiences' just stuff this year). I am also in the middle of a one week 'No Spend Week' which has been tough! It requires planning and also some sacrifice to not spend anything for a week. There are people who have written about doing a much tougher challenge, i.e.: Judith Levine's 'Not Buying it' where she and her partner didn't buy anything 'unnecessary' for a year. They didn't even buy used stuff, anything but unprocessed groceries and essential home things like soap and light bulbs etc. and NO entertainment with a price tag! ack! This year has been really good for me to try a different way of doing things and of living within my means. cheers
    Tara
