Yep! You can use a coupon on a MIR item, you still 'bought' the item. As long as you're able to work it so that it doesn't show that the item was immediately taken off after it was added, eg looks something like this
7.99
3.99
-3.99

then you should have no problem with your MIR. I'd personally do something like buying some other stuff with it, and hand the coupons over at the end so that the amount of that item doesn't immediately show up right after. Just make sure not to do a ton of coupons or a huge transaction to avoid confusing the cashier and causing a kerfuffle.
