I really hate this song - it always makes me so sad (this and "Living Years" always remind me of the people who have left us too soon.).

I have always thought this song was a suicide note. It seems like the author is pointing out that he was always striving for more but that the reality was less then the dream i.e. stars and starfish, hills that were seasons out of time.

To me, I always thought this song was about some younger person dying, and trying to comfort the loved ones he is leaving behind by saying he will always be in their thoughts and hearts.

It is a nice song but it is a very sad song.

I think a lot of people are missing something in the lyrics here:

"Goodbye my friend its hard to DIE..."
"Goodbye Papa its hard to DIE..."
"Goodbye Michelle its hard to DIE..."

To me, it seems pretty straightforward and simple. HE is the one dying, not going away or moving or anything like that. He is dying. Now, my one question would be...why? I always assumed it was some illness or disease, like cancer. However, someone on the web posted something about a person on death row. Who knows. Maybe it doesn't really matter. The whole song is definitely sad, and yet I'm drawn to it. I love the song.
