DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2017 Ford F-150 pickup will be available with a redesigned 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine and all-new 10-speed automatic transmission for more power and better fuel economy.
The EPA has not yet posted fuel economy numbers for the 2017 F-150, and a Ford spokesperson told Edmunds that estimates are not yet available.
The new F-150 begins arriving at Ford dealers this fall, competing against such models as the Chevrolet Silverado, Nissan Titan, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra.
Ford's second-generation 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 produces 365 horsepower, the same as its predecessor, but torque has been upped to 450 pound-feet, 30 more than the outgoing model.
The new engine features two fuel injectors per cylinder for both direct and port injection, which not only help boost power but also improve fuel efficiency and decrease emissions.
Other improvements include redesigned turbochargers with lightweight components and electrically activated wastegates, more durable valves, weight-saving hollow camshafts and fuel-efficient stop-start technology.
Innovation continues with the new 10-speed automatic transmission, which boasts better acceleration and all-around performance than the outgoing six-speed automatic.
Ford attributes the improvement to wide-spaced gearing and three overdrive gears, which allow for lower rear-axle ratios for maximum fuel economy at highway speeds while maintaining optimal power and towing capacity.
As with the engine, the new transmission benefits from considerable weight savings, courtesy of an integrated torque converter-turbine clutch, aluminum alloy construction and other advanced materials. Ford notes that this is the automaker's first transmission with no cast-iron components.
The 10-speed trans also features real-time adaptive shift algorithms that monitor more than a dozen powertrain functions and driver inputs for better performance and responsiveness.
Edmunds says: Shoppers in the market for a pickup that offers both efficiency and power will want to check out Ford's latest engine-transmission combo.
