Gas prices jump 4 cents, another hike expected tomorrow

Drivers in the GTA are waking up to higher gas prices today. The price at the pump shot up 4-cents overnight, taking the average price of regular to about a $1.34 a litre. To make matters worse, another one cent spike is expected by tomorrow.

Only 96 seats available for general public for Leafs first home playoff game

18,201 -- that is how many butts can get into seats at the Air Canada Centre for a Leafs playoff game. But it’s kind of difficult to get your butt into a seat when less than one percent of tickets are made available to the public. A CBC/Toronto Star investigation reveals that’s the reality for Leafs fans as corporations, scalpers and seasons ticket holders have an absolute strangle hold on hockey tickets this post season. In fact only 96 tickets were made available to the public according to this investigation. The rest are in the hands of many just looking to turn a profit given the sky-rocketing demand. By 10am yesterday morning when "pre-sales" were over and the box office re-opened to the general public, only 96 seats were left and priced from $175 to $754 per seat. Many of those were near the back rows, with obstructed views or single seats. The Leafs’ playoff run starts tomorrow night in Boston. About as bad as trying for concert tickets.

Toronto FC advances to CONCACAF Champions League Final

Canadian Jonathan Osorio scored early and Toronto FC held on for a 1-1 draw with Club America on Tuesday night to advance to the CONCACAF Champions League final. Toronto FC won the two-leg semifinal by an aggregate score of 4-2 and will now face Chivas of Guadalajara for the title.

Hubble Telescope Discovers a Light-

Bending 'Einstein Ring' in Space




The graceful arcs at the center of this image from the Hubble Space Telescope are actually the distorted light of distant galaxies,
twisted to form an "Einstein ring" by the gravitational influence of the closer galaxy cluster SDSS J0146-0929.

The perfect circle surrounding a galaxy cluster in a new Hubble Space Telescope image
is a visual indicator of the huge masses that are bending time and space in that region.

The galaxy cluster, called SDSS J0146-0929, features hundreds of individual galaxies all bound together by gravity.
There's so much mass in this region that the cluster is distorting light from objects behind it. This phenomenon is called an Einstein ring.

The ring is created as the light that comes from distant objects, like galaxies, passes by "an extremely large mass, like this galaxy cluster," NASA said in a statement. "In this image, the light from a background galaxy is diverted and distorted around the massive intervening cluster and forced to travel along many different light paths toward Earth, making it seem as though the galaxy is in several places at once." The ring is named after Albert Einstein, who wrote his theory of general relativity in the early 1900s. In it, he suggested that a massive object would warp space and time. This process is known today as a gravitational lens. When the most massive galaxies and galaxy clusters get in line with a more distant object, they produce an Einstein ring – a type of gravitational lens


Einstein rings (and gravitational lenses more generally) give astronomers a huge advantage when they are trying to look at faraway objects.
The rings and lenses magnify objects that otherwise would be too distant and dim to see in today's telescopes.

In 2015, for example, astronomers took advantage of an Einstein ring to look at star-forming regions in a galaxy formed just 2.4 billion years after the Big Bang. This will provide more insight into how galaxies came together in the early universe.

Another Einstein ring popped up in 2016, in a star group within the Sculptor dwarf galaxy.
At the time, researchers said there are less than a dozen known Einstein rings that are partial or full.
The scientific team added that they plan to use this particular Einstein ring in Sculptor to probe the nature of dark matter.
This may help scientists learn about the large-scale structure of the universe, since roughly 80 percent of it is made up of
dark matter and dark energy, which cannot be directly observed.

I can't wait for the James Webb telescope to be launched so that we can peer further in the universe (and the past) much greater than the Hubble telescope. Too bad the launch was delayed until next year. It should have gone up this year.

Has anyone noticed the bright light in the western sky after sunset? That is the planet Venus.

Shortly after Venus sets, around 9:30 these days, if you look in the eastern sky, Jupiter will be rising. Although not as bright a Venus, Jupiter is still bright enough to distinguish it from the stars.

Also, in the morning, before sunrise, Jupiter will be in the southwestern sky. Look further east, and you will see two more planets. Yellow Saturn, and red Mars. Those planets appear to be close to each other (from our vantage point). If you keep track of Mars this year, it will grow brighter as the weeks pass. This summer, Mars will be closest to Earth in 15 years. This is due to the orbits of Mars being closer to the sun, and Earth being furthest away from the Sun.

Anyhow, this is cool stuff and I do hope you all look up to see these planetary luminaries. Hey, you might even impress your friends!
