A Conservative majority government in Ontario
It’s a Conservative majority. Doug Ford will take the reigns as premier in Ontario as his Conservatives cruised to victory last night winning 76 ridings. During his victory speech, the former city councillor continued driving home his message that he make it cheaper for Ontarians to live.
The road to Queen’s Park leads inevitably through the GTA, as the region has more than 50 seats, almost half of them in Toronto. As for voter turnout, it was up significantly, to 58 per cent from about 51 per cent in the 2014 election.
Did you know?
Shepherds discovered coffee in Ethiopia circa 800 A.D. Legend has it that 9th century goat herders noticed the effect caffeine had on their goats, who appeared to "dance" after eating coffee berries.
Kathleen Wynne won her seat, but the Liberals lost official party status
A PC majority is clearly not what the NDP was hoping for but the silver lining for the orange supporters is that Andrea Horwath is now the leader of the official opposition. The NDP added 20-more seats, taking 40 in total last night. The Green party won its first-ever seat at Queen's Park when leader Mike Schreiner won a seat in Guelph.
You can now call Kathleen Wynne the former leader of the Ontario Liberal party. She resigned not long after the final count had the Liberals losing official party status in the legislature, only securing seven seats. Wynne however, won her riding, barely.
Nearly every Liberal cabinet minister was defeated -- Attorney General Yasir Naqvi lost his seat in Ottawa Centre, finishing second to New Democrat Joel Harden. Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault fell to the NDP's Jamie West in Sudbury. Economic Development Minister Steven Del Duca lost his seat in Vaughan-Woodbridge to Tory Michael Tibollo.
At last, Ovechkin and Capitals are Stanley Cup champs
For the first time in their 43-year franchise history, the Washington Capitals are Stanley Cup champions. The Caps edged Vegas 4-3 in Game 5 last night taking the series 4-1. Alex Ovechkin with his first Stanley Cup, also took home the Conn Smyth Trophy after being named playoff MVP.
Today is...
Life wouldn’t be the same without best friends. They’re the friends that can be counted on to be there at a moment’s notice. Friends can be celebrated on any day of the year, but what better day than Best Friends Day? The day is largely unofficial, with no clear clue as to its origins, but that doesn’t stop the millions who mark the day each year from enjoying their best friends.
Good morning fellow Canucks!
Have a fabulous Friday and a wonderful weekend.
