Doug Ford to invoke notwithstanding clause to override Toronto council cut ruling
A “gross overreach” of the province's powers is what Mayor John Tory is calling Premier Doug Ford's use of the notwithstanding clause -- an unprecedented step Ford announced yesterday in a bid to push ahead with his plan to slash the size of Toronto’s city council. A judge struck down the Progressive Conservative legislation yesterday on the grounds it violated the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Tory met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last night and the p.m. seemed to understand the mayor's concerns. The Ontario Federation of Labour is also siding with the mayor, arguing Ford is undermining democracy. Mayoral hopeful Jennifer Keesmaat is set to hold a press conference at 10am this morning, when she's expected to chime in on the issue.

Millions of Americans are preparing for what could become one of the most catastrophic hurricanes to hit the eastern seaboard in decades. Hurricane Florence is carrying winds of up to 225 kilometres per hour, as a category 4 storm.
It's expected to strengthen and possibly become a category 5 storm today before closing in on North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia on Thursday. Over 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate along the Carolina coast and head for higher ground amid Hurricane Florence’s approach.
