GM plant in Oshawa to shut down: source

It has been an employment stronghold in Oshawa for the better part of a century but General Motors Canada is expected to announce this morning it plans to close its auto-assembly plant there. Workers heading into and out of the plant early this morning are being rocked by the news, but details are still pretty scarce. Early reports suggest the closure is part of a shift in the company's global production, with rumblings the decision has nothing to do with the tentative new US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. The union representing 2500 workers at the plant says it doesn't have complete details yet but it has confirmed there is no product allocated to the Oshawa plant beyond December 2019. A press conference will get under way at 10am this morning.

Senate expected to make decision on Canada Post back-to-work legislation

It could soon be back to work for everyone over at Canada Post. Back-to-Work legislation considered by the senate over the weekend could pass the upper house by tonight and possibly end five weeks of rotating postal strikes as early as tomorrow. The union representing 50,000 workers at Canada Post says “all options are on the table'' in its ongoing contract fight with the crown corporation. As of yesterday, the post office and the union were still talking in a last-ditch effort to bring a negotiated end to their labour dispute.

Canada Post back-to-work legislation passed

Full mail service is set to resume at noon today after the senate passed legislation ordering an end to postal workers' rotating strikes. After five hours of additional debate, senators approved the back-to-work bill by a vote of 53-25 last night. The union representing Canada Post argues the move is unconstitutional to remove their right to strike. Five weeks of rotating strikes have led to massive backlogs of mail and parcel deliveries at Canada Post's main sorting plants in Vancouver, Montreal and right here in Toronto.

Andrew Scheer to visit GM workers in Oshawa

Federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is set to pay visit to GM workers in Oshawa later this morning. His visit comes one day after workers got word their facility will be shutting down next year. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he told GM's Global CEO Mary Barra that he was deeply disappointed about the closure, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford is insisting there's nothing the province can do, adding GM officials were pretty clear about this decision.
