Mediator appointed to resolve Canada Post labour dispute

Federal Labour Minister Patty Hajdu has called in an industrial-relations heavyweight to help resolve the Canada Post dispute. Elizabeth MacPherson is a former chair of the Canada Industrial Relations Board and has been appointed to mediate the contract impasse between Canada Post and the postal workers' union. But two weeks after Ottawa legislated an end to five weeks of rotating strikes, Hajdu says she is still hopeful the two sides will negotiate new agreements.

Child killer Michael Rafferty transferred to medium security

The father of murdered Woodstock girl, Tori Stafford is calling for an immediate overhaul of the Correctional Service of Canada. This, after learning one of his daughter's killers has been moved to a medium-security facility. Michael Rafferty was transferred back in March but Stafford didn't find out until just recently. The revelation comes just weeks after Rafferty’s accomplice -- Terri-Lynne McClintic -- was moved back to prison from an indigenous healing lodge after public outcry.

Yes, the justice system needs to be overhauled. The criminals have more rights than the victims. Terrorists get awarded millions of dollars. I really feel for the Stafford family.

Councillor says wards should be able to opt-out of having cannabis shops

With pot shops set to begin popping up legally in April, one Toronto city councillor wants to give individual wards a bit more say. Jim Karygiannis plans to introduce a motion today aimed at to allowing wards within the city of Toronto to opt out of allowing cannabis retailers and medical marijuana dispensaries to open up shop. Municipalities have until January 22 to opt out of accepting private pot shops, which will be licensed and regulated by the province and will be permitted to operate in Ontario starting April 1.

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou granted bail

After a three-day hearing in Vancouver, bail has been granted to Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou but a B.C. judge attached a number of conditions to her freedom. Meng owns two homes in Vancouver -- she will be confined to one with a strict curfew and strict travel zones. She will also have to surrender her passports and has been ordered to pay for all of the security costs.
