Your Engine Might Have Cracked Connecting Rods! (but this time it's a good thing)
*GASP* The engine in your new car might have cracked connecting rods. What do you do? Relax, it’s a good thing! A ‘cracked’ rod is also known as a ‘split-fractured’ rod, and is a design enhancement meant to strengthen the inner workings of your engine, while boosting the cost effectiveness of manufacturing.
^^^^ this is what happens when 'you throw a rod' connecting rod goes through the bottom of the engine block....motors do NOT blow up, they blow down.

This rod (From a SAAB B235R) appears to be one piece, but in reality it has a small fracture that you open by gently tapping with a hammer

The intricate broken edge provides several times more mating surface area than a standard connecting rod. Image courtesy of the saabrally.com forums.
The new method of manufacturing rods involves casting or forging the entire rod assembly as one piece, this is key. The finished rod is then put into a machine that thwacks it in order to snap the center of the big end in half. The mating surface of the two ends is jagged and sharp, as broken crystalline metal often is. When put back together, these jagged edges interlock perfectly, and when bolted down the rod is as close to a single piece as modern manufacturing allows. The result is a very well balanced and extremely strong connection. When you get a brand new connecting rod with a split fracture design, you split it by putting it in a vise-grip and tapping it gently with a small hammer. Check out the video below to see what I mean. There you go, cracked rods, they’re a good thing!
