Most Haunting: Jewish Cemetery, Prague, Czech Republic

The Old Jewish Cemetery is located in Josefov, the Jewish Quarter of Prague in the Czech Republic. It may not boast any names you’ve heard of, but this burial ground from the second half of the 15th century is one of most haunting cemeteries on the planet. Since the local government of that time did not allow Jews to use another place of burial, the graves were dug very deeply, so that twelve people could be buried in one plot, in an upright position. The result is one of the world's most crowded cemeteries. The number of people buried here is uncertain, however, it has been estimated that there are approximately 12,000 tombstones visible, and 100,000 burials in all. The earliest discernable headstone dates back to 1439. While many Jewish cemeteries were destroyed during the holocaust, Hitler specifically requested this one remain intact, as he apparently intended to build a museum here after his assumed victory. Today, you will find a memorial to the holocaust victims and, of course, the tiny graveyard with a very narrow path leading you through the thousands of headstones. Expect to stand in line for awhile, and bring some tissue.

Most alive: City of the Dead (Qarafa, Arafa), Cairo, Egypt

Dating back to 642 AD, al-Arafa, as it is known to locals, is the oldest cemetery on my list by far. Stretching out along the base of the Mokattam Hills, many Egyptians have been forced to make Cairo’s City of the Dead their permanent home because of the country’s chronic housing shortage. By some estimates (nobody knows for sure) five million of Egypt’s urban poor live, do business and form an illegal but tolerated society within a society. There are no cars within its walls, and none of the hustle and bustle that you see on every street in Cairo.
My husband and I visited the area un-guided and felt safe. However, if you plan on taking a tour, you might have a tough time finding someone to take you. Travel agents have been threatened by the government to have their licenses revoked if they arrange tours there. The government’s concern is that the cemeteries are having a ''damaging impact on Egypt's civilized image'', and the Tourism and Antiquities Police have ''permanently banned'' tours and photography within the walls of them. After a bit of research, there are some companies offering a tour of the area as part of other, longer tours. Your best bet is to ask around once you get there for recommendations of private guide and car hire.

I'm getting very busy at work, so I brought all kind of work for me for the weekend. I'll see how much I can get done. I'm wearing my housecoat on top of my clothes, and Quark is hidding in there. Makes it difficult to type, but I enjoy it
Depending on who you talk to you should be able to still get points and enter the contests (MM) up until the end of the year .... But its the Corus network not the local radio stations. Well so I have been told

I requested Al play Chris (Fish) Squire from Yes for the Basses Loaded Weekend.
Nice to see he reads his emails! WTG Mr. Joynes!
I love Fish's lead bass on Starship Trooper!

    Let's try this again.

We're more than a bunch of point collectors, there are many genuine friendships that have been forged through this site and which will continue to flourish - even after the music stops.

We can still gather here, we’ll just change the direction,
Cause it wouldn’t be easy to break off our connection,
We can talk about rights; we can talk about wrongs,
We can become music critics & critique all the songs,
We can talk about radio hosts from the days gone by,
We can all stick together so we don’t go awry,
I guess we could even make up words of our own,
& didn’t the “q” once feature music that they called homegrown?
We can still have coffee to begin our day,
For there’s no need to conclude our little soiree,
We can still post pictures & extend a birthday greeting,
We can still lament about the weather even though that is fleeting,
There’s a lot we can do here to help pass the time,
& I may even write the occasional rhyme,
Perhaps this is one of those wait & see moments,
Maybe a retooling of the Corus components,
Besides our time here isn’t really about winning loot & stuff,
Cause we’re here for one another when the going gets rough,
Our anecdotes & parables of life shall go on,
We’re in this together kids, so we gotta be strong.

And we are here because of YOU
