41 – Long John Baldry, British blues singer (d. 2005)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_John_Baldry
In 1965, the Hoochie Coochie Men became Steampacket with Baldry and Stewart as male vocalists, Julie Driscoll as the female vocalist and Brian Auger on Hammond organ. After Steampacket broke up in 1966, Baldry formed Bluesology featuring Reg Dwight on keyboards and Elton Dean, later of Soft Machine, as well as Caleb Quaye on guitar. Dwight adopted the name Elton John, his first name from Dean and his surname from Baldry.[6]
Baldry was openly gay during the early 1960s when homosexuality was still criminalised and medicated. He later had a brief relationship with lead-guitarist of The Kinks, Dave Davies.[7][8] Baldry supported Elton John in coming to terms with his own sexuality.[7][9] In 1978 his then-upcoming album Baldry's Out announced his formal coming out, and he addressed sexuality issues with a cover of Canadian songwriter Bill Amesbury's "A Thrill's a Thrill".[10]
anyway as i've mentioned before here and there, i met john at the carriage house -
a slightly popular gay club with a hotel upstairs
i had no idea who he was,,,
In 1963, Baldry joined the Cyril Davies R&B All Stars with Nicky Hopkins playing piano. He took over in 1964 after the death of Cyril Davies, and the group became Long John Baldry and his Hoochie Coochie Men featuring Rod Stewart on vocals and Geoff Bradford on guitar. Stewart was recruited after Baldry heard him busking a Muddy Waters song at Twickenham station after Stewart had been to a gig at Eel Pie Island.[5]
the dj had mentioned some info - but i had
a terrible crush on her so,,,, didn't really
hear.
some friends and i saw blondie upstairs at
the elmo, we went back to the carriage house
to see if anyone wanted to go to the private party- i remember losing my lens cap, (terrific photos) - almost pulling debbie harry off stage and having to give up my ' i like ike' button she gave me.
so obviously i should be the driver and invited.
john was in the passager seat in a bug, he was 6 feet 7 inches, glad i wasn't in the back.
by the time we got to the party on spadina i think - it had been shut down.
someone had broken a window in the sotre downstairs.
so off we went to fran's :)

i'll always remember john as a sweet kind hearted guy and although i was silly/young
not to realize who he was - he trusted me
as his driver and i wish i'd known him better.
