Couple aim's to eat at burger chains restaurants in 10 states
We won't be surprised if Whataburger christens one of its sandwiches after Karl and Carol Hoepfner.
The retired Texas couple, who were named the chain's biggest fans in November 2010, are on a mission to visit all 735 Whataburger restaurants across 10 states, according to the El Paso Times.
"We were both retired master sergeants out of the Air Force and stationed in San Angelo in 1963, and that's where we ate our first Whataburger together," Karl, 75, told the paper. "We've been to all 10 states, so we're almost done. Our goal was 722, but we'll probably end up doing 728 because they've added new stores since we started."
He says he wrote a 400-word essay detailing why Whataburger is their favourite place to eat, and he was selected from more than 3,500 people.
"I wrote that we had been all over the world and had never eaten a better hamburger," he said. "We just told them the truth."
Since last April, the two have been travelling in their van to Whataburger retaurants in Florida, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Texas.
With more than 7,000 meals under their belt, the Hoepfners claim they have tried everything on the menu.
The couple also won $8,600 in Whataburger gift cards, which is equal to 3,120 Whataburgers, or one Whataburger a week for the next 60 years, in honour of the company's 60th anniversary in 2010.
"We gave back $7,000, and Whataburger gave us 1,000 gift cards at $7 a piece," Karl said. "We give those out along the way to the homeless and the needy. We've fed over 2,000 people so far.
"We thought why not give it back to people who need it the most."
