It was good while it lasted.
A packed house of an estimated 5,000 people crammed into Del Crary Park on Saturday night to take in the Kim Mitchell concert at Little Lake Musicfest.
A long-awaited affair, unfortunately, for fans of the national music rock icon, it didn’t last long.
Barely into his third song, the skies opened, a deluge erupted and it was over. Cancelled, just like that. A mass exodus followed and soon the wet park was empty. Instead of cheering for one of his hits Go For Soda, they went for the parking lots or walked home.
Organizers were unavailable for comment after the downpour and no word yet on whether there will be a makeup date. The general consensus was they would try to get him back, possibly this season, and he was willing to do so, but that could not be confirmed.
Everything was fine, albeit a little humid, at the start with Courage My Love, a Kitchener band, opening with a 45-minute set for the 60-year-old Mitchell, a native of Sarnia who began with the band Max Webster before embarking on a solo career.
Moments earlier an enthusiastic Emily Martin, Musicfest GM, spoke of how thrilled they were to have him back.
“It is his first time here since 1996,” she said. “It was huge. Everyone has a favourite song and it was so good for Peterborough. He has had such an impact. And, to add to it, he is so nice - and Canadian. We are so happy to have him here.”
Kevin Merrill, his wife Debbie and 15-year-old son Alexander came from Trenton to enjoy the day in town and take in the concert. They saw him once before, in nearby Belleville.
“We grew up with it and are big fans,” said Kevin. “I loved the music and have a lot of memories.”
Debbie added: “I like everything about him. It takes us back.”
Alexander admitted to not knowing a lot about him but what he heard was “good.”
Havelock’s Steve Hornsby and his wife Linda made the trip especially to see one of their favourites. It was their first time seeing him live.
“I have a lot of his records and always liked his songs,” said Steve. “He is a good entertainer.”
Linda agreed with that and added: “I like his voice and that he is Canadian.”
A three-time Juno award winner, Mitchell is a well-respected song writer having penned and recorded other classics like Patio Lanterns, Rock ‘n’ Roll Duty, I Am A Wild Party, Easy To Tame and All We Are.
For the Mitchell fans this night, all they were were wet, there was no wild party and the lanterns was left out to dry, waiting to be lit another time.

Good Morning! Hope you all had a lovely weekend. Those thunder boomers were quite the experience in a tent. Austin survived better than I thought he would. We definately needed the rain.
