Four crew members are dead after an air ambulance helicopter crashed on the James Bay coast in northern Ontario early Friday, the Ornge medical service has confirmed.
There were two pilots and two flight paramedics but no patients on board, Ornge said, adding that families have been notified.
The crash took place shortly after the the Sikorsky S76 helicopter took off in the night from the Moosonee airport, about 16 kilometres south of James Bay.

The four men were long-established in the small community, said one resident reached in Moonsonee.
“They were really good people,” he said.
An Ornge employee said the helicopter had been en route to Attawapiskat, the Cree First Nation that had been in the news recently because of its poor conditions and allegations of financial mismanagements.
Ornge has about 15 to 20 employees in Moosonee to service remote James Bay communities such as Kashetchewan, Fort Albany, Attiwapiskat, some of which can only be reached by air or temporary winter roads.
Another Ornge employee in Moosonee, a paramedic, said there had initially been hope that the crew had crashed in a swamp and could have survived but news came eventually that the aircraft had fallen in the bush.
“It’s pretty sad. Everyone here is pretty sad,” the paramedic said.
“Everybody at Ornge is deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives,” Ornge CEO Andrew McCallum said in a statement.
“They lost their lives ensuring the people of this province receive the help they need, their service and sacrifice will be honoured and remembered,” Premier Kathleen Wynne said.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said it is sending a team to Moosonee to investigate.
Two military rescue aircraft, a C-131 Hercules and a Griffon helicopter, were dispatched to the scene, said Captain Jean Houde of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at CFB Trenton.
However, with confirmation of the death of all four on board, the Ontario Provincial Police is now also involved.

bff2's (& my pseudo) nephew had a job interview yesterday and has a trial run today. Hoping things go really well, so we can hang out more often (job is 5 minutes from me). Quincy cat isn't thrilled about the prospect, but Lily dog can't wait to see him again. He's a smart young gentleman, just a little unsure of what he wants to do with himself. I just have to convince bff2 to back off a bit and let him find his way.

Went to a grand opening of a restaurant last night - lots of fun and even chatted with a few politicos. One I've known for several years, good to see he still has a touch of humanity left in him. The other one ducked out as soon as the cameras stopped rolling - won't mention what I think of him.

Off to do some chores (can we declare a moritorium on chores??? Please????).
