Hurricane Maria regains Category 3 strength as it nears Dominican Republic

Hurricane Maria is now ripping through the Dominican Republic. The now category three hurricane levelled Puerto Rico yesterday, leaving the entire island in the dark. Maria hit the island yesterday morning as a category 4 storm with 240-kilometre-per-hour winds -- the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in over 80 years. Maria is likely to strengthen over the warm waters of Turks and Caicos.

Ontario plans harsher penalties for careless drivers who hurt or kill

The provincial government is proposing harsher penalties for distracted and careless drivers, in a move that it says will provide greater protection for pedestrians and cyclists. The proposed changes include the creation of a new provincial offence for careless driving causing death or bodily harm, tougher punishment for distracted driving, and increased penalties for drivers who fail to yield for pedestrians. Convictions under the new careless driving charge would result in a licence suspension of up to five years, imprisonment of up to two years, and a fine of between $2,000 and $50,000.

Joffrey Lupul breaks silence, apologizes to Maple Leafs for ‘distraction’

Joffrey Lupul has taken to social media again -- only this time to apologize. Today was the deadline for Lupul to file for a second opinion after the Leafs deemed the winger unfit to play following his physical over the weekend. On twitter Lupul wrote: “It’s been extremely tough not being able to play over the past 1.5 years. I will not be seeking a second opinion, but I hope one day to get back on the ice. I apologize to the media, fans, Leafs organization, and most of all my teammates for this unneeded distraction.

Since 1982, the International Day of Peace has begun with the ringing of the Peace Bell at the United Nations headquarters, New York. Peace means so much more than an absence of war. More ordinary conflicts arise from disputes with family, colleagues and neighbours and these disturb our sense of peace. Making peace with one person today, even if it is just with yourself, is a fitting way to mark the day.
