Statistics Canada looking at sewage to determine levels of pot consumption

The federal government is taking a somewhat noxious approach to studying just how much pot Canadians are consuming: researching our sewage. Statistics Canada will spend up to $600,000 a year for a contractor to regularly test waste water from 15 to 20 municipalities across the country for traces of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and other drugs. The survey could be the best way to collect precise data on the amount of pot Canadians consume, according to Anthony Peluso, an assistant director at Statistics Canada.

About 1 million Canadians taking prescription drugs cut back on food: study

Nearly one million Canadians opted for emptier grocery bags and colder homes in order to pay for prescription drugs in 2016, suggests a nationwide study on the topic published Tuesday. The study, published in the online version of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, indicated that 968,000 Canadians reduced their spending on basic necessities to pay for medication -- with 730,000 cutting their food bills and another 238,000 skimping on heating. According to the findings, an estimated 1.7 million Canadians -- 8.2 per cent of those ordered to take medications in 2016 -- didn't fill their prescription because of cost.
