hahahahaha.....haha....ha.... In the case of software piracy there is no physical loss of property. no investment was made into the product you know have in your posession, it is simply data. There's no physical packaging, disk, anything. Just a copy of data sitting on another users computer. All it is is 1 less sale, which in the majority of cases was never going to be a sale anyways. Not encouraging or condoning it, just saying opinions like this are rediculous

I hae to disagree whole heartedly, stealing a key/software is just as criminal as any other theft. The use of "there is no loss" is untrue, there is loss of income Sure we could argue that Microsoft has billions adn he won't miss a measly 169$. We could argue this indeed.

We could also argue that if he needs to "steal" it then he needs it and should purchase it. If he's only going ot "use it" once and forget it. Office offers a free 30 day evaluation if he wants.

Otherwise if you plan on using it occasionally, then the use of Open Office/Libre Office is a viable option. Sure they are slower and have less bloat but and the learning curb is a slight issue for full 100% compatibility however, you do get what you pay for.

Free software has learning curbs and small glitches. 169$ preferred software that is used by all may not. HOWEVER it comes at a cost.

I find it ironice when people say there is no "victim" there is, be it that the company makes billions is a poor excuse for theft.

Now, do I condone piracy? No, do I advocate it no. Do I think it won't happen? HA! Fat chance since anyone who feels like "the big company" is making billions will "stick it to the man" when they feel wronged. Does it make it right? No.

Plus frankly there is just NO NEED to pirate when there are perfectly viable and FREE alternatives!

Microsoft is SLOWLY coming to the realisation that "massive profits" also = Massive LOSSES, while people will pay a FAIR amount for a superior product. However it's taking a long time!

You pointed out that there are free alternatives, so the simple fact of the matter is that most people will never buy it, mostly due to the price. This leaves them with two choices, use a free version or use the 'real' one for free. Either way there would never have been a sale. Of course there will be that one person who was about to buy it, then found out they can get it for free and there is a lost sale.... but most people who download it honestly never would have bought it. That doesn't make it right, but it does mean there was no lost sale.

the kms activator just extends your trial for 180 days, so you don't have to actually download a pirated copy. Run it a couple times a year and you're good to go.

Not true, some people WILL buy the software, in fact I'm paid to help choose, configure and install the new store bought version, it isn't "right" that much is for sure obviously since using something knowingly for "free" when you know it's not legal is piracy/theft, your argument woul not stand up in ac ourt of law. "Just because people download it honestly?" Honestly? I fail to see where downloading a pirated/illegal copy of a software is anything but theft. Don't get me wrong I use to be very much a "who cares" type of person, I have 4 Office 2003 keys and four Office 2007 keys, Legally purchased and owned now, I use to be free or pirate! But frankly maybe I'm just getting old and soft. However I never "pretended" that what I was doing wasn't "borrowing for evaluation periods"

BTW: Using an "Extender" is just as much theft, Microsoft OWNS the rights to the software and in their "generosity" (note the quotes that's sarcasm) have decided that the "free evaluation" is /30/ days Not 30 days +180 in perpetuity! So, yes that's just as much theft, since the eval version is just as valid and useable as the non free version.

And yes, there ARE free alternatives, so "stealing" someones work is really pointless. "But it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of X" you say? Then BUY it if you want the bells and whistles! That is YOUR (general your not pointed at you in specific) perogative entirely and your "right" but please don't take the general defense that "Everyone does it" if everyone didn't stop at a red light, we'd all be walking and the body shops would be rich too!.

Nobody took the defence of "Everyone does it". I don't think anyone is defending it at all, just making some points like how a couple of us mentioned that it usually is not a lost sale since the person who downloads it would almost never purchase it anyway. If someone is wealthy enough that it isn't a lot of money to them, they will buy it. If someone is so clueless that they would pay someone to 'choose, configure and install' software for them, clearly they will buy anything! :P

You can get microsoft office 2010 online for $89 if you are a post secondary student or if you can get one to purchase it for you. Another free option (adding to the others listed) is to use Google documents. It just sucks that you need to be online to use it.
