Mega shop tonight. 5 stores in 4.5 hours, 2 cranky cashiers, many stares and some applause at WalMart.
My mother was an extreme couponer in the 80's when there were double coupon days in canada. She would take a utility trailer behind our 79 GM van for a big shop!
I started paying more attention about 10 days ago when I found out SaveOn and London Drugs would stack. This is the result of my first major shop.
I brought home the following from Superstore, Walmart, SaveOn and 2 London Drugs
40 x 92g old spice high endurance deoderant (donating all)
33x 85g Gillette triple action antipersperant (donating 23)
4x10 advil nightime gels
4xtostitos 270 g
3x tostitos salsa con queso 400ml
4xold spice shaving cream 311g (donating all)
60x gillette foamy shave cream 311g (donating all)
16 chickens (21.7 kg)
6 460g boxes of honey nut cheerios
8lb of prime rib hamburger patties
2 febreze warmers
6 cans febreze air freshener
3x345g corn pops
4x 540g shreddies
9lbs hamburger
1 watermelon
1 box of 18x75g popsicles
1 package of sport card plastic inserts (for couponing!)
1 dozen eggs
1x 168g cracker barrel snacks
2x12 canada dry diet gingerale
1x10 gingerale with green tea
100g poppy seeds
10x100g danone crush yogurt
3 soft taco bake dinner kits - old el paso 312 g
I paid 190.07 at the tills, shelf price (much of it already on sale) $799.46.
at home I found Saveon had screwed up royally, I always chack before I leave the store, but the cashier was so slow and such a B about everything, I fled.
SaveOn overcharges I will recover tomorrow - $36.10
Value of items donated at shelf price+tax=368.47, at 27% tax credit is $99.49 back at tax time.
Free Product coupons on packaging (things I will use anyway and figured at sale prices only, so conservatively) $47
Deposit back on pop cans $3.40
$190.07-36.10-99.49-47.00-3.40=$4.08 cost to me after income taxes are done and cans returned!
99.49% savings off shelf prices.
The plastic inserts for couponing were $3.96 + $.20 tax, so without those I'd be in the negative!
Not counting coupons, tax credit, can deposit I am $153.97 out of pocket, right now, an 81.74% savings off shelf prices

I've been involved with many charities over the years, and all will issue tax receipts based on the retail value of something. It is most common with items donated for silent auctions and raffles, but this is the same principle. Don't inflate the price, take the shelf price and add the tax you actually paid and ask for a receipt for that amount. No till receipts required as long as the retail price is reasonable, that's why I use shelf price as a basis.

The official terms are "In Kind" donations at "fair market value" if you want to google it.

When you say "shelf price" do you mean the price before coupons ?
for example if you buy a deoderant which has been marked 50% off and at that discount it sells for $1.50 (normally $3 retail), is it the $1.50 price figure you use?Trade List /Wishlist: http://forum.smartcanucks.ca/382792-dreamcatcher1962s-trade-wish-lists-canada/#post5928904
