So long story short, I had coupon overage at Walmart and here are some of the stuff the cashier said to me (as a new couponer, some of the stuff she said really made me doubt myself), please help!
    The cashier said:

    1. These are travel sizes, we can't use these coupon for travel sizes (no specified size restriction mentioned on coupon)

    2. There might be a coupon limit (I had 20 travel size toothpaste with 20 coupons which said one coupon per purchase)

    3. We've never done this in our store I don't think I can give you the overage back and I don't think we can give it on travel sizes

    4. I knwo people do it in the US but I don't think we can give it to you in Canada

Have any of you heard any other kinds of rejections to overages/coupons (it would be interesting to know)!

I have run into some problems at Walmart but I just asked them, nicely, to check with the supervisor (re overage on travel size etc) they always come back saying it is okay. It is okay to ask or tell them you will wait if they go check. Try going back to another cashier and ask if they give you the same roadblocks. Good luck.

Everything she said was wrong! I have done everything you did and never had any problems. It's a good idea if you carry Walmarts coupon policy with you. (there is a pdf on here somewhere)

my wal mart is very good about overage... next time, like OP said, just ask to speak to a supervisor. I always bring the coupon policy with me (never had to use it mind you) but that may help too... my sister and my mom are avid couponers so they've helped me out a lot too

One per purchase is not the same as one per transaction...20 toothpastes are 20 purchases within one transaction.

As for overages, I have never had a problem at Walmart. Yes, they sometimes have to call a customer service manager, but the answer has always been yes. But agreed, carry their coupon policy with you.

One thing I do however, is try to have another product to use my overage on (usually fruit). If they owe you money, they need a customer service manager to come to the cash to approve it. Given the lineups, I try not to hold things up longer than I have too.

Don't give up, it gets easier with time...and if not easier on their end (people who have been couponing for years will still run into issues with certain stores, cashiers, etc), you will become more savey and realise that you're doing nothing wrong or illegal.

Yes, they can limit the amount of toothpaste that you buy. To me, 20 is very excessive. If I was a manager, I would limit it to 4 or 6 max.

But the rest of what she said was incorrect.

this is a grey area i've had supervisors come and say nope you can't have overage, no you cannot use it on a trial size, no the coupon is one coupon per purchase PER DAY (even though the coupon does not say that)

another grey area.. i've had many a talk with a cashier stating the difference between a purchase and a transaction and again.. supervisor involved.. once they had to "call upstairs" to clarify which really sucked when your buying 10 advil i ended up having to buy a walmart giftcard to put cash onto then run each through as a separate transaction because i didn't have cash on me and didn't want to credit/debit card 10 separate transactions

She's definitely wrong....Print off a copy of the WM Policy. You can have the overage in cash back or apply it to the rest of the things you are buying. (if you have anything else.)

    Our WM is fantastic.

Well good thing your not the excessive police.

Do you know how often people at our wally buy 20 of something? All the time! And it doesn't matter wether they are using coupons or not.

Heck when Zoodles were on for 59 cents I bought 30.
