The show Jersey Shore MTV’s hit show full of fist pumping, big hair tanned skin partying is what you need to do if you want to be a guido and guidette. Recently the Jersey Shore cast had an intervention on “Extra” to discuss the dangers of tanning in an effort to put an end to their favourite motto "GTL", which stands for Gym, Tanning, Laundry. The intervention was successful and the "Jersey Shore" roommates plan to make the switch to spray tanning. “Snooki” Nicole Polizzi said that she is no longer going to be using the tanning beds because she does not want to develop skin cancer.
Whats the damage ?
- The UVA rays from the an ultraviolet light s in tanning beds are 2 to 3 times more powerful than the natural rays from the sun !
- Sun poisoning may be initiated and magnified by a tanning bed. The first sign of skin damage is pink, red, or blistered skin from a severe burn.
- Tanning bed users have a higher risk of all forms of skin cancer, including potentially deadly melanomas. On average, indoor tanners are 74 percent more like to develop melanomas than non-tanners. They are also 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcino.
- People who tan tend to age faster. This results in more wrinkles, age spots and unflattering changes in texture. The leathery skin that results from too much indoor tanning also results in an aged appearance.
- Indoor tanning can result in a weakened immune system. That is especially the case if you are injured. The UV lights in the tanning bed suppress the immune system. A weakened immune system can lead to infections and an increase in cold sores. It is also dangerous as a weakened immune system can make vaccines less effective.
Here are some signs that may indicate skin cancer:
A skin abnormality that increases in size and appears multicolored, pink, red, black, brown, tan, pearly, translucent, or tan.
A mole that changes color, textures, grows, becomes irregular in shape, or that is bigger than a pencil eraser.
A spot or growth that continually itches, hurts, becomes crusty, scabs, or bleeds.
An open sore that does not heal after 4 weeks or one that heals and reopens.
Regular skin self-exams could save an estimated 4,500 lives annually. Anytime you are concerned about a growth or spot on your skin, it is best to seek the advice of your physician.
Theres still other ways to get that sun kissed look. Why not try out a spray tan or self tanner.
