Monstar; they would loose alot of money, like Wallmart for example, one of the biggest chains in the world closes at 10-11, why? because people dont come in later then that, they have tried staying open 24 hours, they LOOSE too much money doing this, the only time this makes sence to do is near christmas, because people buymore things then.

stores aren't going to stay open, have their employees be mad at the late close times and loose money because a few people arent able to shop within the time restrictions.

Whoa, first its MostarkaGirl - by what sense is store losing money if they stay open longer? Let me tell you, Costco is one of the few stores that offers bigger bulk items at cheaper price and people run to Costco more than any other store. There is no way they would lose money. Second, I worked at Casino and we would go at any kind of hours to Wal Mart and it was always full of people. We used to joke around that we loved coming and shopping at Wal Mart at late hours because no one was around and than all of the sudden (when people finally learned of new hours) it was busier than during the days. Also, talking to Wal Mart big shot, I have learned that Wal Mart makes 50,000$ clean profit in one 24 hours when they stay open 24 hours. So, dont go telling me they wont make any money. Why is Wal Mart expending right now? Not because they are losing money, I bet. Another thing is, eventually, all stores will have longer hours on the weekends, its not a question of if, its a question of when.

Many stores near me that used to be open 24 hours have now changed to close at 10 (or earlier) so it is definitely not the case everywhere that staying open increases profits

They are open until 8:30 Mon-Friday and like mentioned, they cater mostly to a business market where people go during business hours when they are being paid to go

instead of posting on a public forum and being so defensive about it, why don't you email costco headquarters and give them a tip on what they are losing out on

It surprises me that they open as late as 6 on saturdays. Here in Quebec the stores are closed at 5 on the weekend. During the week the latest they are open is 9 for two days of the week (thurs & fri) I think they should increase hours, which will also open up more employment.

Opps, sorry MostarkaGirl, I just noticed that I spelt your username wrong, sorry I just glanced over.

The Casino is open 24/7 because Casinos are different from stores in the way that they work. there is never going to be a time you walk into a Casino and its completely empty, they even offer lodging at their hotels.... But one thing that you will notice since you have worked at a casino, when its "Dead" like it would be at night, the machines simply do not pay out at much, not to say that there aren't machines that are ready to go, but the machines pay out depending on what is going in them.
For example, a popular slot machine, wheel of fortune, there are about 20 of these machines in the 25 cent denom at the casino I frequent, they are constantly full during the hours of 6-10 if not later where you have to wait for someone to get up before going on. these machines take in so much money, they seem to be constantly paying out, however you have to think how much money is put in. A machine isn't going to pay out more then it made, because thats counter productive.
That beingsaid, there are machines that get played less, and even these wheel of fortune machines MIGHT not have paid out earlier in the day, which still gives the people who come at night, or early in the morning a chance to win as well .

See how it makes sense for a casino to stay open? because its not going to affect its profit margins too greatly, that combined with the fact its only one of the venues that the olg takes into consideration when talking about profits, casinos, bingos, sratchcards, lotto's.

It has been announced that OLG has actually been loosing money from its Casinos as well as the Bingo's.... the only reason they make up for it is through lottery's and scratchcard sales.

Also, Wallmart is expending because they are mostly turning into superstores, which offers more services to people. Because of the current state of the economy people are going to wallmart for food because of the low prices it offers. If wallmart did not turn into a super center, I highly doubt that they would profit much from expanding because simply put alot of the people they are trying to appeal to are trying to get back on their feet financially and they aren't looking to waste money on poorly made junk, but instead are going there for food.

I dont think you understood my post. Casino in my town does not stay open 24 hours. I was talking about Wal Mart when it stayed open 24 hours. Once we finished our shifts at 2 AM in Casino we loved shopping at Wal Mart over night. So, you didnt understand that part.

Also, when Wal Mart stayed open 24 hours they were not superstore and managed to make the profit.

I know for a fact that we will see future of stores open 24 hours. We have already seen that happen with Sobeys in Red Deer North side. We see it with Shoppers Drug Mart... I know we will have lots of big stores moving forward to staying open late or being 24 hours, I know I wont be the one that is surprised by that.

You call it defensive, I call it putting my own opinion about it on, as you said, public forum.

I have no doubt the stores accounting & marketing departments have already considered this, done a cost analysis and made a decision based on said analysis.

I sincerely doubt anything said here is going to change that.

It's funny that you're discussing casinos and Costco in the same thread. I was just telling someone today that Costco depresses me much like casinos do. Everybody always looks so sour. Not one smile on any of the customers. The employees seem nice enough. Another thing I can't get past with Costco is that they treat all their customers like thieves on the way out. I know people posting here work there and I'm sure Costco has their reasons for the highlighter shakedown at the exit, but I always found it infuriating. Like I'm going to scale the chain-link fence with my 10 pack of mustard and make a break for it?

When I used to go to Costco I think they were open late on weekday evenings. To 8 or 9pm. I guess I don't understand why the OP's husband has to be with her to shop.

I agree with Ashmaster, just because it inconveniences a few doesn`t mean they must cater to you. When Store hours are more limited people pay attention to them, and generally try to shop within their stated hours, why else would Costco be busy all the time? It actually makes better business sense, if the employees are continuously busy, they keep productivity up and the company isn't just paying them to stand around (something that definitely happened when I worked cash/courtesy at Loblaws after 6pm on a Saturday).

Personally, I don't understand why anyone would want to shop there, everyone brings their entire extended family with them, with at least 15 kids.... (at least that's been my experience at the Merivale location in Ottawa). It's annoying when there's that many people, all together going up and down the aisles with 4 or more carts...holy hell.
