I moved out less than a year ago, and still don't have great floor-cleaning equipment. I've got a second-hand Dirt Devil that does a horrible job cleaning my carpets (but hey, it was free!). When I need to do a really thorough vacuum job I borrow my mom's huge vacuum cleaner. I've also got a sucky Dollarama broom.
My one good floor-cleaning device is an Euro Clean microfiber mop that I bought from Sears around two years ago for $30 when they had a promo going on. I usually drench it in vinegar and water and away I go all over my ceramic and laminate floors! When I'm done I rip off the microfiber cloth attachment and toss it in the laundry machine. The great thing about this is that I don't need to use chemicals (very cost-efficient!), and I find it does do a good job picking up all the dust and hairs. But if there is something really dirty on the floor I sometimes still get down and scrub it down with some chemicals anyway.
But of course I can't use this on the carpets so I'm still on the hunt for a low-cost, high-quality vacuum.
So I'm wondering how my fellow SCers keep their floors clean. What products do you use? Did you get any floor-cleaning equipment for a good deal? Do you have a great vacuum to recommend? I'd love to hear your ideas/feedback.
