Newborn abduction suspect had 'sophisticated' plan

Updated Fri. Nov. 2 2007 11:45 AM ET
    CTV.ca News Staff
A woman accused of abducting a newborn girl from a Sudbury hospital on Thursday carried out a "sophisticated plan," police say.
An Amber Alert was issued in the province early Thursday afternoon, then cancelled after the baby was found safe and sound late last night in Kirkland Lake, about 300 kilometres from Sudbury. The mother and child were reunited at about 3 a.m.
Brenda Batisse, 29, was arrested late Thursday night, Sudbury police have confirmed. She will appear in court in Kirkland Lake to face abduction charges. Batisse was previously reported as being 19 years old.
"This was a very determined individual who had potentially a plan to abduct the child and took some pretty sophisticated steps to facilitate the abduction," Insp. Robert Keetch, of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, told CTV's Canada AM Friday morning.
A male, 29-year-old Trevor Schram, has also been arrested in connection with the abduction. Kidnapping charges are pending, Sudbury police told CTV.ca. Both suspects are scheduled for a bail hearing today in Kirkland Lake, and are expected to be remanded to custody in Sudbury.
Keetch said the girl's parents were relieved to have their daughter returned safe and sound.
"The baby is fine. The baby was examined shortly after being located in Kirkland Lake by hospital staff and then arrangements were made to transport the baby back to be reunited with her parents," Keetch said.
"I had been speaking with them at the hospital during the initial stages of the investigation and they were extremely distraught and emotional. I can only imagine what it was like to be reunited with their child."
Keetch said staff at the St. Joseph's Health Centre site of Sudbury Regional Hospital were alerted to the girl's disappearance at about 1 p.m. on Thursday. The hospital was immediately locked down and police were contacted; however, the baby was nowhere to be found.
Images of a suspect carrying what appears to be a swaddled infant were captured on hospital cameras and broadcast by the media as part of the Amber Alert procedure. The suspect was identified and then located soon after, Keetch said.
The suspect was apparently wearing white hospital scrubs, which police say suggests the abduction was premeditated.
Sudbury police Const. Bert LaPalme told CTV Newsnet on Thursday that the woman may have pretended to be a hospital staff member.
"There was interaction between herself and the mother of the child. While in the room with the mother and the baby, while the mother was distracted, the suspect managed to leave with the child," he said.
The woman walked away from the hospital and may have used public transit to get away, police said.

Holy cow, Thank Goodness for the Amber Alert.
My heart goes out to that Mom so much.
She will never be the same after an ordeal like that.
At least the baby won't remember anything, and be traumatized too.
Hope that woman and man get what is coming to them.
