Yes some of the textbooks aren't worth renting. I know my co-worker who's taking Calculus, he said it is more cost effective for him to buy his book new and then sell it.

Some books are worth it though - for my one of my next classes, to purchase a 2-book bundle I need, it would cost me $105 whereas if I rent both books, they will cost $20 each to rent for the entire semester. Guess it depends on the books.

There was a show on a while ago about these book rental companies and in 90% of cases it was cheaper to buy used/new and sell them

Thanks for all the feedback! My name is Brad Dolan, and I founded BookMob after years of pain/sorrow due to the high cost of textbooks.

Just to offer a bit of perspective on some of the comments:

1) We do not generate any revenues from Amazon, and we are not in any way setup as an affiliate with their program. The link is present due to the way our textbook data is sourced.

2) Our prices are very competitive with various used options, and any rental prices on the market. Will it always make sense to rent? No, but we do everything we can to provide students with the lowest prices and best service possible. The trouble with buying used is that a) it is often difficult to find quality used textbooks b) the pricing is often not competitive c) as I often did, you may have trouble selling them at the end of the semester, due to the risk that the textbook has changed d) selling textbooks is a hassle, and requires an up-front investment in the books.

3) The reason we can't guarantee pricing is due to our pricing model, which adjusts pricing on our books in real-time based on supply and demand in the market. For example, if one of our students were to add a book in July and return to checkout in September, that price may have changed. However, in many cases this new price would actually be lower than their original price. Amazon will also take this approach if an item in your cart has been issued a new price.

I am in University and have checked out these sites. I find it better to buy used. There are facebook groups for many universities where students can sell their used books. I have had great success using these groups. I suggest to other students, find what works for you. Remember if you buy used the value only goes down so much and you can usually sell the book for the same price you bought it for, if in good condition!
