If you are going to Vancouver, there is lots to do.
I think just to get a flavour of city as a city, one should definately see Stanley Park, Gastown, Chinatown, Kitsalano and Commercial Dr. If you feel like checking out a little further out in the burbs, Metrotown in Burnaby, Steveston in Richmond, Scott Rd Area in Surrey and Downtown Langley are all pretty neat.
Vancouver is seriously known for it's natural beauty. You go for a hike on the mountain, hang out on the many waterfront areas in GVRD and go for a stroll in any of the many parks.
Vancouver has some the best prices for the widest range of foods in the world.
Also Vancouver has all sorts of festivals that don't require money.
BC Transit Day passes are great. You can take the SeaBus and the water Taxis from downtown to Granville Island and Kits.
Science world, Playland (PNE) and the Aquarium are neat, but very very pricey. And really I think they are not nearly as exciting as many other things you can do that give you a better taste of what Vancouver has to offer. But if you are really eager to see those attraction, I always have found the gas stations and 7-11's often have some kind of deals for discount admissions.
