Just popped in to Safeway and there are some very good on sale deals for the "Buy 5 House Brands Get 50 AMs" January 13 - 26, 2008 period.
In fact there are a couple of outstanding ones:
English Muffins 6 @ $1.99
Buying 5 costs $11.95 and you get approx. $6.75 worth of AirMiles
Bread 675g 4 for $5 or $1.25 each
5 would cost $6.25
If you're buying the average gift card through AirMiles @ $0.135/AM then 5 bread gets you $6.75 in AirMiles
You make more in AMs than your spending!
My wife and I just purchased Best Western gift cards that worked out to $0.143/AM
That means if all I bought was bread for every $6.25 spent I got $7.15 worth of cost savings elsewhere and "I STILL HAVE THE BREAD!".
In my previous extreme example if all I did was buy the bread and donate it to a food bank for a tax receipt and used the proceeds for Best Western Cards then every $6.25 spent and donated would reduce my taxes by about $3.12 and I'd have the $7.15 in AMs
So $6.25 spent creates $3.12 + $7.15 = $10.27 elsewhere
$10.27/$6.25 = a 64% return on your money!!!!!!!!

This ends today, just found out. Extreme bonus at the Langley Willowbrook Safeway. Spend $100 - 250 miles, spend $200 - 500 miles, spend $300 - 750 miles.
Hope someone can take advantage of it.
Cheers
thanks
Well maybe this is an improvement.
Over several past periods my AM account has been credited for name brand items but I'm missing about 350 AMs for the Buy 5 Get 50 promos. (Yes, I'll be talking to them).
I suspect it's a result of the "Mix & Match policy.
However, the new flyer is out today and has a house brands insert. AMs are offered on individual items so you wouldn't even have to buy 5 items.
There are many items offered but the flyer doesn't list prices so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to find the items also on sale.

Haven't had a chance to check the In House promos this week (March 9 - 15)yet but there are a couple of outstanding name brand offers on Coke products:
They are Buy 6 Get 50 Airmiles
This works out to approximately $7.00 worth of AirMiles.
If you bought the "We Care" booklets you can take 10% of the price with smart shopping. (I'm not considering bottle deposit or recycle fees here).
Coke (2L) 3 for $4
6 costs $8.
Use the "We Care" coupon and now you're at $7.20. You get $7.00 in AMs and you still have the product. Effectively, you're paying $0.025/@L bottle.
Evian Water (1L) or Powerade (710ml) 4 for $5
6 costs $7.50.
Use the "We Care" coupon and now you're at $6.75. You get $7.00 in AMs and you still have the product. Effectively, they're paying you $0.0425/ bottle to drink the stuff.
As always, confirm the offers when you're in store as they've misadvertised these things in the past.

March 30 to April 5
OK, Safeway does appear to have altered their Buy 5 House Brands Get 50 AM program.
You now seem to be able to buy individual or 2 items at a time. It's a little stingier as some of the Buy 2 are Get 15 AMs but still you don't have to always buy bulk if there's no need now.
Also, the last little while it seems the House Brand bonuses are only every second week.
This week is:
10% off Tuesday on Total Purchase of $35 or More
This would also appear to be the week they will offer few house brand bonuses but I can't really say until about Monday when they've got the labels up.
Still, you can do well on at least one Name brand, especially if you buy bulk, have the "We Care" coupons and can store:
Christie's Soda Crackers 900g @ $3.99 each part of a Buy 5 Get 60 AMs (approx. $8.40 value)
Combining the We Care as part of the 10% off (sometimes they resist this but it should go through) you end up bringing each box down to approximately $3.20 each. (This assumes using a $2 We Care grocery & $2 We Care meat coupon).
You get 12 AMs/box = $1.48
Effectively, you get each box for $1.72

Today, Tuesday is 10% off on a purchase of $35 or 10 x the AirMiles.
NOTE: The 10 x AirMiles only applies to the base miles not bonus AMs:
1 AM/$20 spent AMEX
1 AM/$40 spent VISA
If you're using a "paid for" credit card then it's
1 AM/$15 AMEX
1 AM/$20 Visa
Generally though you're better off taking the 10% off. Here's why.
Suppose you spend $40 on AMEX (no fee)
10% off = $4.00
$40 AMEX = 2 AM
2 AM x 10 = 20 AMs = approx. $2.80
10% off is better.

April 6 - 13
OK, here's a good example of being careful with Safeway's "Extreme Special" coupon offers
Royale Bathroom Tissue 2 @ $9.99 Get 50 Airmiles
Bounty (6 Roll) 2 @ $6.99 Get 50 Airmiles
This amounts to 25 AMs per item approx. value $3.50
Effectively:
Royal @ $6.49
Bounty @ $3.49
However, quietly tucked away at the very bottom of page 7 in the flyer:
Purex Bathroom Tissue 2 @ $6.99
Sponge Towels (8 rolls) 2 @ 6.99
Both are Buy 2 Get 25 or 12.5 AMs per item = $1.75 per item
Assuming same size as Royale the Purex is effectively $5.25 vs. Royale's $6.49.
Purex is the better deal this week.
As for Bounty, assuming same size it clock's in at $5.24 vs. Bounty's $3.49.
It would appear Bounty is the better deal this week.
Again, However:
Sponge is 8 rolls vs. Purex's 6. If the individuals rolls are the same size then then 6 rolls of Sponge is equivalent to $5.24. Knocking off the $1.75 for the AM value brings it down to $3.49 the same as the Bounty. In this case the one whose rolls give you the greatest area/roll is the better deal.

I haven't posted much on this thread for awhile because Safeway has really cut back on the "In House" AirMile Specials. There are a couple this week but nothing outstanding.
Regardless, something occurred in my AiRMiles account recently that has me wondering. Perhaps some of you have the answer.
A month or two back for Father's Day Safeway had $50 Home Depot gift cards with bonus AMs. I thought it was 25AMs/card but could be wrong.
I was going to buy $100 worth but they were out of the $50 cards when I went (people love a bargain). So I bought a $100 card and customer service recorded the purchase manually for later AM credit.
Looking at my statement the other day I see I have 100 AMs credited:
I would have expected to see Home Depot listed as I never spend $100 at Safeway at a time on groceries.Quote:
<table class="account-history"><tbody><tr><td class="sponsor">
</td> <td class="descr"> $100/100 AIR MILES </td> <td class="miles">
</td> <td class="miles"> 100</td></tr></tbody></table>
Then I remembered, Safeway often has a 100 AM bonus if you spend $100.
Does this mean that my $100 Home Depot gift card purchase counted towards Safeway's extra bonus as well? If it does this is a terrific way to boost your returns. Look at it this way:
If you purchase the card during a week Safeway offers the bonus and as the average value of an AM is $0.14 then the $100 spent reduces your costs 14% elsewhere or about $14.00. (Actually a bit more if you purchase with an AirMiles credit card)
If you're like me and don't spend $100 at Safeway at a time then buy the card and use it over several visits. Every $10 spent comes with a bonus 10 AirMiles (approx. $1.40). Recently Safeway ran a special on Kellogg's cereal. A purchase of $35 worth (5 items) earned 100 AM. Using the gift card was worth an extra 35 AMs. Total on $35 spent = 100 = 35 = 135 AMs = $18.90 in AMs.
Effectively this was a 54% savings.
Now I recall that Safeway often gives 250 AMs on a $200 purchase. If you get that by purchasing a Safeway Gift card to do your shopping then you reduce your costs 17.5% right off the top.
If Safeway in fact is crediting the purchases of gift cards towards their $100/100 AM bonus and you shop at places they offer gift cards for it would be very wise to buy gift cards at Safeway.
EG. If you rent videos at Rogers or Blockbuster, eat at Swiss Chalet, Kelsey's, Harvey's or Montanas, etc.
I use AMs for 2 for 1 movie passes. Safeway sells movie pass gift cards. Buying the gift cards gets me the equivalent cost of the paid portion of the movie pass.
Make your money go further.
