I went into GT to get some Ziploc bags, which were marked as $2.97...but upon check out, scanned at $3.27. I am not much of one to complain about pricing, but with a SCOP stickered right on the counter, I pointed out the discrepancy. The cashier went to change the price and I quoted what was written on the counter. She told me I was wrong, and I pointed out verbatim what the code said. She called a manager and the manager said the same thing...they were saying that the customer must pay the ticketed price, and that the ticket is not a sticker, but the shelf label, and that the product was not free. I contested what she was saying, and she rudely said FINE, and gave me the product as what the SCOP said to do.

Giant Tiger- Alliston, Ontario- AWFUL SERVICE

Has anyone else had this problem with the scanning code? I worked in a grocery store when it was first introduced and we NEVER had issues.

Been my experience that retail staff - anywhere - will almost always try to merely give you the price difference, rather than the item for free. You generally have to ask (and sometimes argue) to get your freebie, and I'm convinced that staff are often coached to just "act dumb" about the whole idea of getting an item free of charge..

In your case the staff at GT were correct that the shelf tag is the "right price" for SCOP purposes.

It depends on what happened - there are no Giant Tiger stores near me, so I have no idea how items are priced or tagged.

Did the item have a price tag/sticker on it? If yes, then the store employees were correct.

Scanning Code of Practice does not apply to individually ticketed items - only to items when there is no price on the item (but instead only on the shelf).
    Source:
    http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/e...eng/01262.html

    From that site:

    Scanning Code of Practice

If the scanned price of a non-price item is higher than the shelf price or any other displayed price, the customer is entitled to receive the first item free, up to a $10 maximum. If a Code of Practice problem cannot be resolved at the store level, please call 1-866-499-4599 to register your complaint.

What is a non-price ticketed item?
A non-price ticketed item is any bar coded merchandise that does not have a price affixed to the merchndise.

I agree with you there. The ONLY place I know of that automatically use SCOP without asking, is Fresh Co. They are my favorite store to shop at, especially now that they PM (limit of 2 of each item). I know when I worked at WM, they trained us about SCOP but we were told never to offer it unless the customer asked first, then we had to honor it.
I am looking for quick trades for my pre-surgery stock up!

The GT here does it no questions asked. Well i'll notice the difference and point it out, and the cashier changed it without a word. It's nice not to have to fight for the right service (being so used to Walmart, lol)

I was at Giant Tiger last night to purchase batteries they had on sale. They were in the flyer, with no "limited quantities" listed. They didn't have any on the shelf so I asked if they had some left, was told no. I asked for a raincheck and was told "We don't do rainchecks." ??????
