Computer questions [SOLVED]

First the background
Old computer windows 98se bought in 2000
New computer windows vista basic

I need a way to trasfer a lot of music from one to the other. My db's memory sticks don't seem to work in old computer- keeps asking for drivers :shrug: I did find a generic driver online, but they want me to muck about and delete stuff in places I don't like to delete stuff from.

I have burned documents a cd that I want to transfer so those are no problem, it's the music that keeps me stumped. Google documents won't accept mp3 files.

Any ideas? There are ways to do it directly if I had windows xp, but I only have 98.

Second thing is, I plan on giving my old set up to a family I know that does have a computer, is there anything I should be doing before I give it away?
Most of the stuff is staying on the puter, and I do have a program that I plan on using that will overwrite personal stuff I, but anything else?

If you have a router, you should be able to hook both up, network them together and just copy and paste files from one to the other. I say should becuase not positive about the Windows 98 ability to do this - I have done it with both XP and Vista.

pc anywhere lets you acess one computer from another it might be one of the easiest way to get what you want from one computer to another.

Great tips but the ones I'd use are the ones you are using now, with burning CDs. But at the same time, this can be costly, so if you have the time, use a hosting service to upload your music for the part time. (Make sure to ZIP it, so it doesn't take as long to upload individual songs) I use Mediafire, but there are lots out there. Another way is the flash drive idea... but Windows 98 does not support USB by default as you found out. While momg's PC Anywhere is an idea, be forewarned that your system might detect it as Malware (remote viewing can do that) I also don't know if it runs on Vista, but worth the shot. Prue's idea of a router would work too.

As to what you should do before giving it away is wiping clean traces of your files. I would use CCleaner for this, or the open-source program Eraser. Make sure to set them to their slowest, most secure settings so the people can not recover your files later. Other then that, you should be good. Wise Disk Cleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner also help with cleaning too.

Whenever I give a PC away, I include what was on there, the settings and whatnot, so if they change something, they might see why it messed up.

What about re-burnable cds? .... what are they called... Re-Writeable! :)

Those work very well. Until I get my external hard drive, I'd highly recommend them for backups and anything else.

I was going to suggest something like this too... Mediafire is a great site for it too.

hrm, I woulda just taken the old hd outta the old pc, added it to the new pc, messed around in the bios and then transfered my files that way. Then again... mangling the bios when have no idea what you are looking for might be a bad thing :(

It just sounds really tedious to move or copy files to some online service just to move them back to the newer pc.

The BIOS is a fragile thing, Dawnikus, which is why I don't and did not recommend it. I've crashed a few computers in my day by messing with it. While it is a hassle to use net services, I figured they would be easiest. But to each their own and is how we learn :)
