This is a review of Hershey's "Pot of Gold" chocolates.

Approximately two years ago, a long-standing Christmas tradition changed...for the worse.

Okay, I'm being dramatic - but it was around two years ago that the Pot of Gold chocolates changed. I hope I'm not the only one who remembers them coming in long, rectangular boxes - in many flavours (red boxes = fruit & nut, blue boxes, gold, and black, I believe). Each box had different flavours - and a signature rectangular piece of chocolate in the middle.

Now, the boxes have become much less rectangular, the flavours are sorely lacking, and different "collections" have the same flavours...just with a different type of chocolate (milk, dark, etc.) These new Pot of Golds are a significant downgrade.

I'm not sure why I continue to pick up a box of Pot of Gold every Christmas season (this year was when they were on for $3.99 at SDM) - maybe I'm half hoping that they will have changed for the better. Not so. I really miss the old Pot of Golds - will probably be buying Russell Stover or a different brand from here-on-in.

Anyone else feel the same? Or do you prefer these new boxes better? Or do you not recall the old?

I agree, the quality has gone down, but I still don't really mind them. I asked for the caramels this year because I like caramel candies.

I miss the original Pot Of Gold too! Eating the 4 carmel corner ones then trying to remember which ones were strawberry, accidently getting the yucky orange one, trying again lol.
And don't feel old, I remember Pot Of Gold before the started putting the Solid chocolate one in the centre, & I'm only 28! lol
I am currently looking for coupons for non parishable foods or grocery coupons good until December to help with Christmas food helpers.
If you have any to trade please PM me.

I don't know why they had to screw around with a good thing. I used to love Pot of Gold chocolates - there were a few flavors I didn't like, but for the most part the chocolates didn't go to waste (more like they went to waist, lol).

Now, they've down-sized to the point that unless it's 99 cents or less, I won't buy it. Don't you love how the plastic divider takes up more space in the box than the actual chocolates?

P.S. ... starting to hunt for ShoppingChannel GC's with no minimum purchase ...

I am so glad I am not the only one who feels this way!

I am only 20! So yes, definitely not old. It's sad that companies are cutting corners to the point where the whole product changes.

LOL! Oh so true. I feel like all the new ones taste the same. I agree, the old flavours were all a hit, for the most part.

You know - I honestly didn't realize that until you pointed it out. Definitely something worth noting. I don't think I'll be buying them again, especially since there are better alternatives out there.

Yes - I couldn't even name a favourite in the new ones if I tried.

I'm wondering how they can be much less rectangular. Do you mean smaller?

But I agree - when I was a kid, they were one of the many things I looked forward to...those and the five lb. box of Ganong chocolates...*drooool*.

Ha! Yes, I suppose I did word it awkwardly.

The old boxes were much more elongated. So they had a greater length and looked more like a typical rectangle.

The new boxes are much less elongated - a much less lengthy rectangle.

    Hope that makes more sense.

But yes, the boxes are smaller too

What kind of rodent or insect did you find covered in chocolate?!? Since you've said that, I'm imagining all kinds of horror stories...
