i use permenant hair colour, been even trying different brands john freida, olia, perfect 10 etc. Been going for brown colours for a year or so now, usually light to medium shades. It seems everytime i go to dye again i need a all over colour ,not just roots. for quite awhile i've gone longer between dye jobs but i'm starting more regular now, once every month or 2. I've been dying a long time so i'm doubting shampoo would be a problem as it never used to fade unless it's a age related matter. Any suggestions ??

apparently, UV is what causes most fading.

and shampoo can cause fading. I have been doing my hair for 20 yrs now and it fades so early now. But since I switched to sulfate free shampoo lasts about 3 months. Most shampoos that are color protect can sulfate which strips the color. Also certain colors fade faster anything with a red tinge or red dye fades fast. I dye my hair red hair from bright red to red and it doesn't last that long. My aunt is a hair dresser so she explained to me how to make my color last. Plus use Moroccan oil helps

I've never dyed my hair at home. I only ever dye it in the salon.

Well it might be a silly question but do you use a swimming pool? cuz the chlorine in the water can affect hair dye and make it fade.
