That worked on my dad, but my husband is a computer geek. He has no interest in Canadian Tire stuff and thinks Best Buy and Future Shop are beneath him because they are too user friendly. He gets only the nerdiest computer parts from tigerdirect! haha.Quote:

My husband is supportive of my coupon addiction - He brings home coupons he finds at friends houses or at work in the lunchroom But when it comes too getting him on board with using them I dunno - We went to the local SOF to buy a few things I was doing great with my sale items and coupons and along he comes with his arms full of full price items (mostly junk food) that I had no coupons for - Totally blew my savings out of the water it drives me nuts - I would never ever buy a box of ice cream sandwiches at full price omg I can get coupons for them and combine it with a sale - He`ll never learn.
My husband got on board when I stockpiled items specifically for him. He knows how much those things cost because he used to buy them himself. Now he follows me around the grocery store asking what's a good price for different items. I think when he sees the savings on the bill or when we get a dozen bag of groceries for less than $50 he is really impressed. He does use coupons but he always reads the back carefully to make sure the cashier can't challenge him. Plus, we also have the same monthly spending budget. It's the same from before I started couponing, so now we have more money for entertainment, which he appreciates. Maybe you can spend some of the coupon savings so he really sees the benefit.
My DH is in heaven at Tiger Direct. You can expoloit this skill by having him create awesome spread sheets and he can track the savings. I saved 1700.00 last yr with coupons and I tracked it on a fancy spread sheet. DH is totally on board now.Quote:

For the boxes with coupons on them, I tend to have a lot of tupperware storage or ziplocs to contain the product once I have taken off the coupon. Thanks to this I have not lost ANY pin codes or coupons, and have been able to add to my stockpile without worry (I'm guilty of snipping coupons in the parkinglot, inserting HH into a ziploc and running back in to use the coupon).
Getting hubby involvd is hit and miss... If I hand him a coupon and specific instructions he may pull through, but if I tell him to grab "that coupon and go to Walmart" it's not going to happen. Usually he's just good to keep around for "1 per customer" type purchases.
He'll help me out by printing the coupons I ask him to print for me (I don't have a printer at home), or he'll ask his co-workers to save the flyer inserts for me, and sometimes he'll grab a few coupons for me if he sees them. He used to mock me for it all, until I took him out to GT when I had frozen yogurt coupons... I got 9 boxes of Chapmans treats and 9 2L tubs for absolutely nothing! He was shocked and amazed... and totally unused to having "ice cream" in the house! He's been totally onboard since July :) He just needed insentive.
DH said he would go recycle walking FOR me next monday haha
He is also rather nonchalant about what people think about him - therefore he never had a problem with coupons or price matching :)
Depends on the person. All I could suggest is just point out how much $$$ YOU save, the person who you think is judging you isn't going to reimburse you the savings.
As for cutting stuff out I cut it as SOON as I get home, that way I know I wont forget about it and he wont throw it out lol
Hubby is supportive to a point-he's happy I save $, but he doesn't understand stockpiling and would NEVER use a coupon himself either. I shop by myself (or with my baby) and show him afterwards. I think I finally clued him in to the stockpile when he needed body wash last month and we didn't have any because he told me to stop buying him any because he was good. I showed him the regular price vs what I could have paid and he went huh. Since then I've organized my stockpile so I can see what we have instead of depending on him. But, I am also mindful of not letting the stockpile get too outta control so he doesn't have any ammunition!
You mentioned about the car issue and having to wait for him to come home. I sometimes wait for him to come home just so I don't have to take the baby. I don't ever bring him. Do you have friends/family that would want to get in on the deals with you? Or maybe tell him this is something you really care about (just like there's something he cares about) and there's a lot worse things you could be doing with your time...
I agree witht the spreadsheet business. My husband likes looking at that. And I always leave the really good deals out so he can see (and cuz I'm proud) like the free cheap stuff. Remember, men are visual!
If it is a 20 min walk to the good grocery stores, maybe you should invest in one of those carts? so that you can load it up and push it down the street. It would be great exercise in the nicer weather. I definitely had one of these babies when I was younger, and delivered sears catalogs.

As for getting Hubby to pitch in? I agree with the idea to show him how much you save on items that HE would normally use (body wash, deodorant ext.). It's a really hit or miss with men, they prefer convince over savings. Just make sure that he understands that couponing, is your way of further contributing to the family and saving money!
Hubby is pretty good with the couponing I do..now He'll clip coupons, if I send him shopping First ? he ask is where the coupon for it... He only once threw out a 3.00 coupon for hamburger off the HH.... he went out to the recycle and brought the box back..lol.. Now when I get home I cut them out of the boxes and do the ziploc thing like others do.. Now today I was at zellers and got 4 trial size m/w 4 glide and 4 cans of soup... I emptied the bag on the table and asked him just what he thought that cost.... HIs answer ws knowing u 5.00,, surprized him $1.91... best part of it was it was his money... Ifind that when i'ts their money your spending they are the happiest, as you are saving them money.. It sure works in this house
Great discussion. Nice to know I'm not alone. My husband thinks this is totally addictive and that the amount of time spent on finding the deals and getting the deals doesn't warrant the amount saved. I've basically told him he can't shop for me unless he only picks up what I ask him too as he previously used to never look at prices ... if he wanted oranges and they were $8 a bag - he bought it anyway. Now at least he pays attention and lets me know that he picked it up on sale. Baby steps.
My DS at least it trained now to eat the cereal and leave the box on the counter rather than throw it in the recycle. He loves his cereal that one.
Now I need to work on our dog. Two weeks ago I had the last El Paso Box with the Cheese FPC .... cut it out and left it on the counter. I spend a ton of time hunting around to see where I might have put it .... but it was gone - the dog ate it! I did a test and cut out another cardboard piece and left it on the counter and it was gone within a couple of hours..... Live and learn.....
OP has a couple of issues confronting her:
1) DH knows OP coupons/clips yet cleans up everything. There's a difference in their sense of order. Flyers, packaging are important to OP yet DH sweeps all away--he needs to explain it to OP.
2) DH seems impatient on shopping. That is an impression of time matter. Some men just want to get their groceries and go--there is 0 interest in talk, comparison, hearing reasons to save.
It is massively hard to have to be the person always accommodating other people thus altering one's own habits. So:
a) you find a container/drawer/envelope for your clippings, coupons and flyers and mark it as obviously as you can with your name and DO NOT RECYCLE or similar. You have to dodge his neat streak for awhile.
b) when you grocery shop with hubby, go for the simple one coupon per item deals and forget doubling up in separate transactions-save such runs on your own or when going with a friend/neighbour.
c) set aside time with DH after dinner or whenever you are most able to have a chat. Find out what you both need from each other when you are together and see what items come up. Maybe something has been long avoided and thus this disparity in shopping styles is making it obvious.
If you're tracking your spending, show your budgeted amounts before and after coupons (in other words, record from your receipts how much you would have spent WITHOUT coupons, or promotions like SDM points). Just for one month should do it. Easier than a jar, and you see in concrete dollars just how much money you're saving. Tell him that if he helps you coupon for one month (even just when you shop)and doesn't complain, you'll give him 10% of the extra you save to spend it on whatever 'guy style' thing he wants - beer or tickets to a hockey game, or whatever. He'll be converted in 30 days or less!
My hubby wasn't all the impressed at first, $2 here, .50 there, didn't mean much to him until I made a simple spread sheet on excel to track my savings-monthly and then annually, when he saw the thousands I was saving our family, THAT is when he got on board. We used the savings one year to take the family to Disneyworld. Most guys can only focus on the big picture. He's still man of course...I told him last night not to throw out the hamburger helper box (FPC on it) after he finished making dinner but forgot and put it into the recycling box but he's getting much much better. I can send him to the store with max 3 coupons and he will use them or price match too but only if it's ONE thing. Small steps...things are not perfect but are much much better now.
