Today I noticed that they sell a big CAN of Heinz Ketchup at the grocery store. It's over 2L of Ketchup and costs around $7.99 at my local Metro grocery store. I'm sure I can get it for less at a different store or at Costco.
Has anyone ever bought the can of Ketchup, is it the same quality as the regular ketchup in the plastic bottles? How much have you payed for the can?

My mom used to buy it all the time, I always thought it was thicker than the Heinz ketchup in the bottles... but I haven't had it recently.
The only thing is, how fast are you going to use it up? I get 1L Heinz ketchup on sale for 2.99, and then buy a few bottles - but the others are sealed...
When I worked at Loblaws it was mostly bought by people running hot dog stands or who had bbq parties, not really for regular household use.
As to my understanding...Ketchup has to pass a QA/QC test before it can be sold.
They measure how long it takes to flow 10cm at a certain incline. From here, there is a variance of time it can be between.

We buy the cans. We separate it into our one big huge squeeze bottle and one smaller bottle. We use it all before it goes bad.
I've never bought the big cans of ketchup. It takes me a while to get through just a bottle lol.
i never bought a big can but i saw it's advertised in RCSS flyer this week 2 bottles pack (over 1 L each bottle) for $8. I'm also looking to buy some - running low. LOL

The name of this snack sounds like someone is spelling out the product a little too clearly. Back home, I think these might be called "ketchup puffs", or maybe even "Heinz balls." Okay, maybe the latter wouldn't be acceptable in polite company. In Japan there are often these overly explanatory names of certain things that have a foreign origin. We wouldn't say "tomato ketchup" because we assume all ketchup is made with tomatoes. Similarly, the Japanese call coffee cups "mug cups". A mug is a cup, but they have a different word to differentiate a coffee cup from other types of cups.
Getting to the product at hand, I found this 60 gram (approximately 2 ounces) bag at Okashi no Marche discount snack shop in Koenji. I need to do a bit on that particular shop some time because it is like the deep discount version of a discount snack shop. They have cardboard boxes full of very cut price items and these were a mere 50 yen (60 cents). That makes them about half price. In Tokyo, it's not uncommon for stores to offer discounts as paltry as 3% and exceptionally rare to find a discount this high on anything. I've never seen a place that dealt in soon to expire food with steep price cuts because I think such items would not appeal to Japanese folks who have a scrutinizing eye when it comes to freshness.

I did notice at the wholesale club recently that they have the Heinz ketchup in the large plastic tubs, similar to French's mustard. I wonder if that's the new packaging for the jumbo size?
We do go through a lot of ketchup in our household, to the point where I question my cooking skills when the boys drown everything in a slurry of sauces...

I remember watching a Dr. Oz episode on how long certain things last once they are opened. I was amazed! Personally I'd never buy a big tub/can o anything, we just wouldn't use it before it went bad.
I searched for the Dr.Oz episode and this quote was what I found:
"Dr Oz said that ketchup lasts only one month when you open it and leave it on the counter, because lactic acid and yeast builds up. By putting your ketchup in the fridge, it can last up to 6 months, but after that, throw out the ketchup because it becomes a good environment for bacteria to grow."1

We buy from Costco and put in old ketchup containers. I can't remember the price but it had gone up again
It's for household use! Esp if you have major ketchup users! We use to save the bottles then rewash and refill when we got one. I think it did 2.5 of the 1.5 litres, but it's been a while. Yes, it does taste a bit different, but thats just because of the packaging. Just like heinz in packets tastes a bit different. The only difference with this ketchup is refridgerate after you fill the bottles :) Ketchups been cheap enough (2.99 a litre) that were well stocked. I remember 10 years ago those big cans of ketchup was $4.99
