Scholastic Book Fair - Brag

My son's school library hosts a Scholastic Book Fair twice a year to raise money for books.

I volunteer for this event, but it has it's perks.

Most books at the fair are usually priced higher than the prices you find in the flyer. However, Scholastic always sends one or two boxes of clearance books that are priced at $1 to $3.

Since I was helping set-up I got first pick through these books.

Pardon the blurry picture but my cost was:

Sub-total was $51.85, but the librarian offers her own manager special of $10 off every $50 spent

So OOP was $41.85

French books are so expensive. If anyone has recommendations on good french books (DS is in great one) let me know. Je ne parle pas francais.:confused:

Aww, French books do tend to be more expensive. Especially if they're translated and not original text.

Is it because your DS is learning French at school? If so, I suggest asking the teacher for a list of books he/she recommends.

Your local library might have a section?

I remember as a kid, I had a lot of those picture dictionary books in French. They helped quite a bit. Comics were fun, too, since it didn't make it seem like learning.

If you're looking for yourself, there's always French for Dummies :lol: hehe

I think French for Dummies would be too advanced for me. DS is in immersion and I'm trying to find books that we both can read. I found out this week that some of the translated books are not translated into proper french, so I'm trying to avoid those ones.

I wouldn't think so. It's an instruction book for adults with no experience in the language, but that's a choice for you to make.

If you'd like, go to a book store like Chapters (in store or online) or online like Amazon, and look at their French workbooks. Or any other bookstore, really. There are a ton and there's some for each grade level. Pick up the lowest level for you and your kid to work together.

When I was younger, the Made Easy series were popular (ex. French Made Easy). I had those and others that I can't remember. Not sure how they are now. I wasn't as young as your DS though at the time, more in grade 7-8 so it's something that might work for you more. I had different ones for elementary (wish I could remember which ones, sorry),

Also, most schools here have a classroom library and/or a school library. You can ask the teacher if you can jot down the books she/he has available in the class and/or ask the librarian to guide you in the right direction.

What do you mean "not proper french"? Mistakes? Or just different words used?

I always scoop the clearance ones and try to get my kids to choose at least one as well for themselfs love the book fair! plus last week we had it I spent 30 bucks mosly clearance books and i got a free stuffed cat lol!

By "not proper french", I'm assuming that the wrong word translations were used to maintain the proper meaning of the story.

I'm not sure where to find cheap french books, I went through French Immersion as a kid and the books were expensive then too. The one series of books/Magazines that I loved growing up was called "J'aime Lire" probably a 3rd/4th grade reading level for a french immersion student, I think they have a younger version as well.

I found the publisher's website for Canada. They have titles listed by age (note that they have canadian magazines listed as well). The one that would probably be at a grade 1 level is called "Pomme D'api" A year subscription is $40.
