I agree with the OP. I've never understood SDM brags that exclaim "spent $210 but will get back $200 on mega redemption day so all this for $10!!!"

    1) No, you actually spent $210, not $10.

    2) You are forced to buy a SDM "sale" prices which are usually higher than other store chains (unless you are only buying milk, eggs, butter, etc. or whatever is at rock bottom prices that week, which there are usually limits on so you will have to top off with other items at inflated prices to reach your purchase quota). And no, not everyone likes to buy 6+ of food items that are at okay prices just to get the 20x points. Also not everyone needs to buy diapers, formula, or wipes.

    2) Bonus/mega redemption flyers more often than not are lacking in great sale prices (coincidence, I think not). So, if you are redeeming $200, are you really getting $200 worth? NO. Unless you are redeeming for premium cosmetics brands or other items that never go on sale anywhere, your $200 redemption includes:

    • % of SDM markup
    • % of treats that you would usually never buy
    • % of items that yes, are on sale, but still pricier than other stores

Can you tell I don't shop at SDM very often? Heck, I stopped being a regular shopper after they switched from their old flyer format to the current gigantico version that is more difficult to wrangle than a squirmy toddler.

And don't get me started on people who calculate their saying based on regular prices.

    e.g., $4 Royale, reg. $10. Used $2 coupon so saved $8!

Umm, no you didn't because you would never pay the $10 regular price in the first place. More like savings of $4.

Where are all the folks that spend hundreds of dollars on MIR items?? The times when you can spend $150 on a 20x day and get $150 back AND also the points...those are great times!
I guess we should also remember that SDM charges tax on top of that redemption...so not really completely free on those days.
I was just thinking today...that I am almost running out of Covergirl makeup...would really like another 50x points on CG products...and throw in a $20-25 gas card too...good times, good times!

When I do go to SDM on 20X the points day I always find it really stressful because I usually don't participate but I'm always standing there wracking my brain thinking about whether I need something. Around Christmas I bought my husband a video game on 20X the points day but ended up returning it because I found it on sale for $20 less elsewhere. I always just think of the OOP money I'm spending.

It's like saying I got this for free with coupons. Well no, if it's taxable, you still have to pay tax so it's not free.

Unless you redeem at SDM and get it rung in at 2002, then it's free. Or for me, at Mourelatos, coupons and FPCs are rung in before tax.

Or at dead Zellers, get 10% SPC and then FPCs so pay just pennies. The good old days.

I think basically every points/loyalty program relies on people subconsciously double-counting the benefits.

With Shoppers points, as with any other loyalty program, you need to keep a very close eye on whether the points you are earning are worth the amount you are spending. You definitely can benefit if you do things right, but not without being VERY careful!

I'm lucky to have a SDM that lets me choose whether I pay tax or not. I go early on Saturday morning on 20x day and use all available FPCs and manager is always there to let the cashier know to put them all in as 2001 so I just pay tax and get 20x points.

I know this thread isn't suppose to be about earning the points, but I just wanted to say I love Shoppers Optimum. I buy what I need on the 20X days and earn "free stuff". It's free to me because I would have spent the money anyways, so it's a bonus to get the points. I don't normally shop there any other times except the 20X times days and earn hundreds of dollars worth in points.

My SDM is the same way. Yesterday I went in and used all my FPC's and 2$ royale coupons and got 19300 points for 17.xx oop. All because they gave me the option to use 2001 or 2002.

The rudeness and fighting in this thread needs to stop immediately or the thread will be closed. This is not Sc's fashion to act like this. Period.

I wish mine would let me do that. I would gladly pay the tax on FPC on bonus days.

They don't do this automatically. You have to ask. Pretty sure, by law, stores have to charge tax on anything taxable, even though coupon says it's free or tax is included in face value of coupon.

Government is probably too busy to go fix this loophole.

What a lovely SDM you have, I wish mine is like that.

QUOTE=sarajk;4493045]Sunraven you are getting what I mean.

That $300 was physcially spent at the store.
When you redeem the $250 in points is that when you get the FREE stuff.

Definately each to their own but its hard to explain to some newbies when they see these great savings that aren't real.

And I wasn't even considering coupons into the equation. Just what was actually spent/put on your credit card.

You can only save the $250 once - when you use the points![/QUOTE]
