Okay...so I shop at walmart fairly regularly and haven't had any hassles until today.
I don't usually have a ton of coupons but today and on a few other occasions I have and I have reached their coupon transaction limit a couple of times...supervisor comes...overrides..we all move on....NOT TODAY!
I guess I exceeded their coupon limit...I had close to $50.00 in coupons today...a bit unusual....so it called for a supervisor at the end of my transaction.
The first supervisor that came over told me that the system was saying I exceeded the coupon limit because I must have used multiples of the same coupon..I said yes I do have multiples of the same coupon....
She highlighted my:
-$4.00 advil coupon
-$1.00 Vileda gloves coupon and
-$3.00 pediasure coupon...
She said that because the coupons stated 1 per purchase that the system was not letting the cashier enter multiples of them..I asked how the system knew which coupons were being entered for which item since coupons in Canada are not scanned...she said that it knows....um hum....
She proceeded to tell the cashier that she was not going to give her the override because she could get in trouble and that she should get another supervisor to help.
All supervisors were busy so instead of supervisor #1 replacing supervisor #2 so she could help me...she simply stood there staring at the other cashiers that were working....CRAZY!
I suggested several times that I had probably exceeded the transaction limit for coupons and that it had nothing to do with the wording on the back of the coupon....they kept insisting it was the coupon wording the system was reacting to....okay...
Supervisor #2 finally came over (15 mins later) and apologized and offered to ring through the advils separately...fine...
So I paid for the advils separately but my coupons for the pediasure and vileda were still on the same transaction and it worked fine...so I asked why the system didn't those on the same transaction and the supervisor had no response....
Help....please correct me if I'm wrong....does the walmart system recognize coupon wording and if so , how? If the coupon is not scanned, how does it know what coupon goes with what item?
Does anyone know the coupon transaction limit for walmart? I thought it was around $30.00....but maybe I'm wrong....
It was so frustrating and nerve racking....Last edited by chulamom; Sat, Mar 17th, 2012 at 02:02 PM.

Nope. The computer cannot tell. Not sure why your coupons didn't all work in 1 transaction. Maybe the cashier messed something up?

I suggest that you email home office at walmart.ca and complain all she had to do was put her key in the slot and do the override. the system doesn't know what coupons are of what.

I've never had an issue with coupons at WM with this situation and I've gone over $100 in coupons used so ... not sure really. Maybe its something your store has specifically put in place because of issues they were having with cashiers stealing/giving things away for free?
I know at my store they were having to write down where the PM's were done at because cashiers were "PM'ing" items for people that weren't on sale anywhere. So maybe thats why your store needs to get an override for a certain coupon amount?
Never experienced this despite using loads more then $30 in coupons multiple times.
Sorry it wasn't too good of an experience for you. Call the store and ask to speak to the store manager and explain what happened and how you're not happy.Insert Clever Signature Here

That's horrible that you had to go through that! These supervisor's take couponing way to personally as if their losing money from their own pockets... WM staff makes my blood boil.

Never heard about the coupon limit unless it is RCSS. Any way, you got really unfriendly supervisor to deal with They should be trained more in Walmart.

This happened to me once, the cashier was putting the coupons threw as price overrides and adding them to the bill - +$5 +3 +2 etc; I asked her about it and she said it was the new way they were put threw - k shrug wait and see.. At the end my transaction had gone up $45! The lady said it was definitely correct - I said nope its not.. Can we talk to the supervisor on today? The supervisor came over and said it was because of the wording on the coupons - limit one coupon per purchase.. I just pretending to believe that and waited while everything was resolved..
Its never happened again so its definitely not the wording on the coupons! Takes a lot of patience

No, there is absolutely no way the register would be able to read the coupons. They must have a limit on the number or the dollar amount of coupons you can use before a supervisor needs to override it. Maybe the supervisor had never come across that situation before. It sounds more like she didn't know what to do than that she was trying to be difficult.

Yeah, that's dumb because at Walmart they don't even scan the coupons! They subtract them by hand.
