The paper that comes with the card says that there is a $1.00 monthly maintenance fee on the card, but it is waived for the first 6 months. It would be deducted off of the card.
Since it also states on this paper that the "card will expire after the last day of the month shown on the front of the card" then it leads me to believe that the 6 months prior to this expiry date will have the $1.00 fee applied to it. So it wouldn't matter when you activate the card, the card expires in a year whether you activate it now or a month before it expires.
Also, because the cards in U.S. funds, when you use them in Canada there is not only the applicable exchange rate applied to the amount, but they also may charge an 1% fee for the currency conversion. It also doesn't necessarily mean that the exchange rate used is one that will be in Canadian's favour (making Cdn. worth more) as it also states that "Visa will convert any foreign transaction into US dollars using an exchange rate for the applicable central processing date that is (a) selected by Visa from the range of rates available in wholesale currency markets . . .". So they are going to choose a rate that is in their favor.
I'm lucky enough to live & work near the US/Canada border so I will be using my card in the US.

Is this a clue that you've had before, and you know the "exact" link you used before to get the answer? Sometimes you really have to pick the clue apart.
What exactly was the clue anyway, do you remember? You have me curious now . If the clue comes out again for me, I want to watch out for it.
I've rec'd over $1500 so far of Amazon.ca gift cards. All for free!

I was #1 in trivia before and #2 a couple of days ago. Never got anything...without looking I'm assuming that it's based on a weekly, overall score. The American sports questions are what I have trouble with.
For the Scav hunt...I've always swore that the symbol was missing on pages I thought they would be on, that's why I never bothered much with them. But a couple of times I found the symbols in other places. Always look at other possibilities. Also remember that there are a limited number of clues and they get reused so the more you play the more you will know where to find the symbols.
Don't quit...I completed one to say I could do it and I won $1000. You just never know when you will get lucky. So keep playing.

yes I found it frustrating at first, in fact really frustrating but now I can usually always finish it. It's true the more you do it the easier it gets
I saw that you could win with the trivia questions but I don't know what? I have been on the list a couple of times but I'm not very good at it. I hear you rdadey with the american sports stuff, but I have noticed that the trivia questions will repeat themselves as well
