I'm not trying to stir things up here people, just think that it's too complicated to set this contest up to weed out wrong words. The whole idea of these contests is to increase listenership. More people listening, the more the advertisers stand to make from the numbers listening to their ads. If revenue goes up, then these advertisers are willing to sponsor these contests. Q doesn't care about the cost of these prizes, they don't pay for them anyway.
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home;
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin' for to carry me home.
I looked over Jordan,
And WHAT did I see,
Comin' for to carry me home,
A band of angels comin' after me,
Comin' for to carry me home.
OK everyone, all together now.... Swing Low...

just to be a sh*t disturber..... from a database point of view it would be pretty easy to create a separate table to capture the word and date/time it was entered. you could automatically discard invalid entries, save the correct responses to randomly select a winner..... and just give users the (#*%^@*(# points so you don't start a riot!
just imho!

I agree, but the database must be set up to look for certain letters, or indicators if you will, to let it know whether the entry is correct or not. And it must give poor spellers or persons misunderstanding the word said, the benefit of the doubt. Like this morning, a girl in my office told me she heard the word Almond when in actual fact it was Allman. The database must be set up to take into account these slight errors in word pronunciation and spelling so it probably looks for the first couple letters to determine if the word entered is correct or not. Why it allows --- or abcd...yz is beyond me. To me it is a glitch in the database and if you are told you receive 1000 points and your account activity indicates that you have entered a UK Road Trip Winning Word, then you have an eligible entry..... omg, I'm sorry I opened this Pandora's Box...lol,, oh well, open debate is good. It gets people thinking at least. And it's fun to debate issues as trivial as these cuz it breaks up the day.
