GTA drivers do pay more insurance. My insurance went down 20% moving from Scarborough to Whitby even though the drive to work (in Scarborough) went from 10KM to 32KM. Insurance Co says most accidents happen close to home and the demographics of Scarborough have a lot better chance of being in an accident.

And that I would be more than willing to stake my life on. I can quite easily stay off the roads for those 5 days where conditions are really not safe for driving. The fact is that speed, carelessness, not paying attention to the road, drunk driving and poorly maintained cars (including having older than acceptable tires on the vehicle) are the causes of 99.9999%+ of accidents, not the actual "type" of tires on the vehicle.
Actually 86% of all accidents in the GTA are due too improper signalling and lane changes( right out of an insurance study). That includes sliding from lane to lane because you don't have proper tires. And you are right you are staking your life and those with and around you if you think that all seasons are safer and all that is needed no matter where one lives and the temperatures are sub zero on a regular basis.

So what you are saying is, living in an area with less snow has higher insurance. Life in the big city. Yeh go figure. My insurance is higher because of my postal code ( not where I live in the city ) and yet I avoided an accident because I had winter tires while on a city street and was able to slow down on an ice covered street where cars were piling up at the bottom and then was able to steer and drive around before the truck behind me slid into the mess. That was actually two avoided accidents.

About the equivalent $22.00cdn, unless you raise your own but don't get caught, it's a jail term.

I do not agree that there is any added safety or other benefit in having winter tires if you reside and drive in the GTA, for all the reasons I have stated in several prior posts. So I will leave it at that. I rest my case.

I do travel outside the GTA so winter tires are warranted. I've been using winter tires since after my first winter driving a front wheel drive car in 1987. Ever been stuck behind a car without winters on on a small grade with its wheels spinning because of lack of grip. To say it only snows 3 or 4 days a year in Toronto where winter tires are needed sounds like selective memory or they just moved here within the last 2 years. You cannot compare the superior traction of winter tires with allseasons. At least half a dozen times a year I've had to take evasive action to avoid someone sliding into my lane or through oa stop light (sign). I left Toronto in the middle of a snow storm (this winter) to go to Detroit, where it was dry as a bone an 6 degrees( C ) and never had any problems ( they didn't melt or even get warm ). Like auto insurance those with a clean record have to pay for those slipping and sliding, and ending up in the ditch ( not always that drivers fault ) because of driving habits. So make it mandatory.
Nope. Don't need them. There is never any good reason to go to Detroit.

Ya well I used to work in the burger industry and I just spoke to another guy on the job who still works in the burger industry and he said that Tim's burgers were only good five days a year so he ended up trying donuts instead. Did you know that they change the donut recipe in the winter so they don't wear down so fast, but if the temperature goes over 285 Kelvin those ones will melt so they switch back to the all-season recipe? I think that anyone who eats the all-season donuts in the winter should have their OHIP premiums increased 5% so the rest of us who seem to care about things like this don't have to pay for their lack of self-respect and because of that we all end up sliding through intersections so don't eat a donut if you are in the car behind me and .... INHALE .... what's with Boston Cream donuts anyway because I used to deliver pizza in Boston and I never saw any donuts like that and ....
