Refugee / pension resolution for Canadians: go to the States, claim refugee status based on the fact that if you were to return to Canada, you'd be discriminated upon based on age.
What do the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Titanic have in common?

They both look good until they hit the ice.

Canadian icon Gordon Lightfoot dead at 71

    Canwest News ServiceFebruary 18, 2010 11:40 AM

Iconic Canadian folksinger Gordon Lightfoot has died.

Lightfoot died Wednesday night, according to his friend and fellow musician Ronnie Hawkins.

"He died last night, I've had a couple of phone calls already," Hawkins said Thursday from his home in Peterborough, Ont.

Born in 1938 in Orillia Ontario, Lightfoot began his singing career at the tender age of five by performing I'm a Little Tea Cup at his local church.

He would later take up piano and the drums, and sing in a variety of bands, including a barbershop quartet — all of which would lead to a career as one of the world's most beloved folk-rock singers and a Canadian icon.

In a career that spanned over six decades, Lightfoot became famous for his deep, distinct voice and poetic lyrics. He emerged as one of the premier singer-songwriters of his generation and was heavily influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

Some of Lightfoot's most famous songs include If You Could Read My Mind, Sundown and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

    He was 71.

but now some people are saying that it's a hoax and he's not dead?

    I feel for you.

We as a society absolutely have to respect the rights of all individuals, especially little individuals. However, we as a society also owe it to our little ones to make sure they know that if they do wrong, there will be consequences. Alas, I fear we've gone from the sublime to the ridiculous.

It may make you feel better if you take a page out of the "Network" script .... remember Peter Finch's famous rant??

    .... why not try

I never heard a bad word spoken about this guy. He never sold out, he stayed true to his talents and we have lost a true Canadian cultural icon.
